With my better half working all weekend i had a bunch of time to watch all my Netflix that i had purposely piled up to get ready for my bachelor weekend of nerdiness; the last 2 DVD's of Elfen Lied and due to someone mentioning it here that Battle Royale movie, and went to the theatre for the first time in a while.
Elfen Lied. A very disturbing anime and only 4 DVD's (13-14 eps) so it was quick to get through. Overall i really liked it, but i wouldnt reccomend it if you cant handle excessive violence, nudity, and other adult themes (this anime touches on them all, from pedophiles to animal cruelty). The story, art, music, and voice was great and I liked the ending. There were some obvious plot holes and i think this easily could have been twice as many episodes, but am thankful that they didnt drag everything out on purpose. If you like animes that are more adultiash then you need to watch this. It was powerfully emotional at times.
Battle Royale. I thought it was really cheesy. The movie tries to get you to care for the characters, but i was having a hard time keeping everyone straight and remembering names. It is a tough task to accomplish in a two hour movie, so i kind of expected it. Given a series, they could have done a better job. The plot was interesting, but i didnt really like the ending and everything was hurried. I'm glad i watched it, but i dont think i would reccomend it all that much.
V For Vendetta. Also was not very impressed. I had heard great things about this movie so i was looking forward to seeing it, but was disappointed. The theme has been overdone (lying, corrupt, super powered government) and V somehow is like some super spy. I would have liked to know how he got into some of those houses and compounds to kill those people as opposed to just suddenly having him appear behind someone with a knife on their throat. And for god sakes, why wouldnt someone just shoot him in the face. I had a hard time following some of the dialogue, but maybe that was just the theatre speakers. The ending was very dumb. They knew how to stop him, it was even brought to the top officials attention, but totally ignored it...
Anyways, with EL done and with the long waits between Full Metal Alchemist DVD releases i'll have to start a new anime, someone give me a good serious one to watch.
