In North America, it's one of the bigger gaming sites, they even managed to nab an interview with him. The Ziff Davis and IGN networks are pretty big too, so I'm sure he's heard of it.

Nah, 1up's tiny, much less popular than even Gamespy or Kotaku. Some small sites are cool, I like to look in on Magicbox regularly, and Gamerankings and Penny Arcade every now and then. I don't particularly have much respect for 1up though, every time I read 1up it seems to be something dumb; like giving solid B+ titles like Bully, or C titles like Fire Pro Wrestling a 10/10 while putting down more deserving titles. Not to mention their stupid articles like the one on the Final Fantasy series. Their staff also blows.

The bigger game sites, the ones whose opinions matter since they're the ones everyone reads, are IGN (biggest in North America), Gamespot (Biggest in the world), and GameTrailers; there's also Gamefaqs which certainly has by far the largest gaming forum community on the Internet.

I'll certainly attest to a change in 1up. Not recently, but quite gradually I have noticed that the user created content has slid off their frontpage. While they still have clubs and user created content deep in the crevasses of their site, there is only a space for 6 of their most popular bloggers of the day on the frontpage. I've clicked in there a couple times and it is, on occasion, first time bloggers. Could this mean that their user base has moved away? does it mean that it was a decision from the top in order to distance themselves from more user-content based blog sites like destructoid and to a lesser extent, Kotaku? Who knows, but it's certainly something.

Also, go read the gametrailers forums. Go read it for me. They are all either retards, ESL individuals, or retarded ESL individuals. Everytime I visit their site there is a "help me choose a game to buy" thread up on their frontpage. Worst forum population in the entire universe. There is nothing constructive going on in there.

This is an interesting observation!

Gaming communities generally suck, and I always thought 1UP's focus on deep community integration was a mistake. Boards and member blogs, fine; but trying to build a gaming social network was a mistake. I'd be happy if they just focused on delivering solid, traditional content.

IGN's used to be terrible too, but they have grown up quite a bit. There is a lot of quality posting there now.

While they may be the best (and I don't agree, I feel Def Jam Vendetta or Fight for New York is the best), that still wouldn't warrant a 10 since wrestling games are mostly terrible, well at least the majority of WWE ones are. WWE games were fun back on N64, but as soon as Gamecube/PS2 hit, they became absolutely terrible.

For the record, IGN and Gamespot both gave the game a 7.0/10, read each of the three reviews and it becomes VERY apparent that the IGN and Gamespot ones are much higher quality reviews.

Fire Pro Wrestling on PS2? By the reviews:
-Graphics about 15 years out of date, low quality even by SNES standards, but the game is a PS2 exclusive.
-clunky UI
-irritating music
-lack of a tutorial
-archaic and clunky controls/gameplay
-No story mode

It has a lot of edit options, but that's about all it has going for it.

IGN and Gamespot gave it 70% a piece.

OK...but that's an opinion thing. The people who have been playing this series for 10+ years don't mind the graphics, don't find the UI clunky...they love the fact that it has 7 trillion characters and moves up the ass. They love the gameplay and the series for years because it's fun and an awesome wrestling game. In Japan, where the series has been released for years, it's not a "C" title.

And since when is 7/10 a "C"?

If an RPG was developed and released exclusively for the PS2 and had the graphics quality, story quality, and gameplay of Final Fantasy 1, but with 7 trillion characters and weapons, would you think it should be classed as anything higher than a C game despite the fact that there are people who consider FF1 (and therefore probably this one) to be awesome? Do you think people would take a site seriously if the site gives games like this one 100%?
Zeus wrote:In Japan, where the series has been released for years, it's not a "C" title.
I forgot to mention, Famitsu gave it a 30/40 which is 75%, not a whole lot higher. I have also never seen a Fire pro Wrestling game on Japanese sales charts, or North American ones.

Check Gamerankings sometime. The average game is a 7/10. When you say it's a "C", you're implying that it's below average.

And I'm not sure what crazy-ass, American-style grading system you have out in Boonyland, Canada, but over here, a 70% is a "B", right from first grade to university.

If you want an ABC ranking, you'll be going by 5's.

See, schools have it unfairly ranked against you--in a test with ten questions, missing three is a 70% (that's basic math). That's a C, which is considered average. So, an average student has a margin of error up to 3.

Even if you get half the test right, you still fail it. In a logical world, getting half the test right would equal a C, which is the "middle" grade. However, because schools demand their students do well, they screw the system up in order to force students to work harder. Those who do not are eventually weaned out and are deemed to be failures of the system.

This is a double-edged sword, because it works well for some kids and doesn't for others.

However, if you try to apply that to video games, you're going to realize that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If you have 5 letter grades--F, D, C, B, A, then you're going to be able to evenly match them up to one another through a 5-point number system (five stars works too.)

1UP has gotten it pretty good--it translates it's ten point system into A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, etc.

I'm not sure if they incorporate A+'s or B+'s, but if they did, that would make it something of a 15 number system, which screws my math up.

I like the grade system. XPlay also has a good system, and I like it when they explain their system: It's just an opinion, and it shouldn't be complex.

RentCavalier wrote:Even if you get half the test right, you still fail it. In a logical world, getting half the test right would equal a C, which is the "middle" grade.
On what grounds? Where is it written that half right is average? You're assuming there should be a linear mapping from the test score to the grading system, when there is no reason there should be. Getting a C does not mean you have "half knowledge," but that you performed competently. The fact that you can get an F while still doing a lot right is important - both in school and in games.

Although, for the record, I think it's usually pointless to map numerical score to letter grade. This assumes a teacher can craft a test where such a mapping holds, which is not always the case. Sometimes it's too hard, sometimes it's too easy, sometimes some questions are unintentionally harder than others. When you have a large enough group, the students' scores usually take on a bell curve, and figuring out what grades they deserve relative to each other is straightforward.
