I didn't even need to play the demo I downloaded to know I wanted to play this. Picked up a rental today... Dead Space will have to wait.

Impressions to follow.

The game looks cool, but I don't have a PS3. Is there anything else worth playing on a PS3? It's on PS3, right?

Nothing that would really tickle your fancy, Don. I don't think so anyway. I think there's a Disgaea for PS3? Not sure. The 360 is really in the lead as far as JRPG releases in North America go. For the PS3 you've got this and Eternal Sonata (also on 360)... I don't even have a clue if any more are on the way unless you want to count Yakuza 3 and that Yakuza spinoff.

Anyway, after a couple of hours with the game it's still in tutorial mode. The combat is pretty easy to get a grasp on. Like most strategy RPGs, this one works a rock>paper>scissors system in the form of tanks>infantry>lancers(heavy infantry). Sandbag emplacements serve as shields from enemy fire. Since I'm still early in the game I have no idea how customizable your characters are.

The game looks great in and out of battle. The non-interactive scenes between battle seem to use the in-game engine but, annoyingly, do not allow you to pause. Thankfully, they're not very long. There are also 'talking head' scenes featuring animated character portraits (and subtitles, even though I've turned them off) against static backgrounds... which just seems like lazy design given how easy it would be to use the entire character models.

Localization is pretty good so far. The voice acting is good but the dialog is corny as hell and full of pauses. Forgivable, though, given that despite how colorful and whimsical the game appears to be, it also has some more mature themes (war, death, racism).

TO BE CONTINUED!

I'm thinking of of picking this one up and stashing it away until I actually get a PS3. Just in case it turns into one of those games you don't see again unless it's on eBay for $100+.

Yeah I wanted to pick this game up but I've been neglecting Socom and playing Fallout 3. I need to get my Metal Gear Solid trilogy back from my friend at work so I can beat Snake Eater and then finally play MGS4.

my squads of sexy ladies are unmatched! Game certainly punishes you if you make mistakes, but is very rewarding when your strategy and troop selection work out. Bovine recommends this game for those with a playstation 3! All others weep at your tacky green dvd cases which house your 360 games!!!

So, the game rewards you with sexy ladies?

Disgaea 3 came out for the PS3 back in August.

And everyone should play Metal Gear Solid 4 (after playing the first 3, of course). Since you seem to be RPG only, there is some 360 ports (Eternal Sonata, Oblivion, Enchanted Arms) and some more on the horizon, most notably White Knight Chronicles

I don't think it's really anything to buy a ps3 over. It's still at a too high price point with some unexciting exclusive software (resistance 2 is AWFUL!).

I agree. There's a reason I still don't have one myself

I've been on chapter 16 for the last week or so and I don't know if I'll finish it. Ideally, I'll find a save game to download that's right at the end (ch. 18).

For the last few battles I've been forgetting to save every turn, which becomes very necessary in the latter half of the game. So I would spend maybe an hour or more carefully going through a battle only to lose and have to do the whole thing over again. This is made more maddening watching the enemies SHUFFLE SHUFFLE SHUFFLE about which eats up an extraordinary amount of time when there are between 15 and 20 enemy units and they've always got plenty of CP. Then you have the fun of actually moving all of your fucking units around the map, which is such a pain as the size of the maps increase. Shocktroopers, Lancers, and Snipers (on some maps) become a hindrance because they eat up so much CP just to get them where you need them to be.

I'm just worn out on going through all that work over and over again for another bunch of talking-head bullshit ("Welkin, I...", "Hmmm...", "Uh...", "...", "!", "Alicia!"). This shit is lazy design and should be trashed if Japanese developers are actually serious about appealing to the larger North American market.

I DO like the game. But as many steps as it takes to evolve the genre, it still has some pretty antiquated trappings.
