I'm thinking about applying for the MBA program at my school since I graduate in the spring. I was curious what to expect from the GMAT
The GMAT is a write-a-test-about-all-the-useless-shit-you've-forgotten exam to weed out people that has absolutely NOTHING to do with anything you'll do in an MBA. I wrote one back in '98 when I got into an MBA program and it was all this crazy-ass grammer shit and weird geometry crap and other more basic stuff. It's to test you're "general knowledge" which is a better way of saying "weed people out by making a stupid, useless test". I went through a similar accounting knowledge based test when I was doing my designation. No real benefit to the test, they just test you on the weirdest shit to weed people out. It's all about the effort you put forth to learn that useless shit to pass the exam.
I wrote and passed it and when I got to my MBA, I found that it was all second- to fourth-year level courses grouped together for people already with jobs to upgrade their education. Heck, a lot of the accounting and undergrad courses I took will count towards an MBA except that my ridiculous school won't let me use them towards the MBA 'cause then I'd basically be getting an MBA by only taking an extra two or three courses. How they gonna make money that way? So now I have to get a super-MBA. Fucking ridiculous. But enough of my bitching.
Just get some books and write lots and lots of practice tests. The more the merrier. Of course, that costs money, so try and get them used or online or something. And no more than about 3 years old, they like to change these tests around a bit to make them even weirder and fail more people. It's really the only way to study for it 'cause the shit is so useless that they're testing, it would be much more effort to do it another way. Besides, that way you get a much better idea of what they're looking for, which is all any test is really about anyways.
Just expect absolutely useless shit 'cause that's what it's about.
