Not all baseball players are ridiculous spoiled brats. From what I've read and see, they seem to be the most down-to-earth of athletes in general, although that's a relative term to other athletes. And the Yankees really seemed to have done this because they wanted to as opposed to a photo op. It seems to be completely random. Good on them, they deserve credit.
Same with the Boston Red Sox. Look at what they just did as a team (unanimous vote):

BTW, this is the very definition of "principle" for those of you who get confused when I refer to that kind of thing. Those players could EASILY have just said "it's only $500k. We're making $146M between us, we'll just take the easy way out and pay it ourselves since it's chump change to us". Schilling almost sounds like he would just have done it himself. Instead they decided to make a big stink about it to say to baseball "listen you fucks, this is wrong and you WILL correct it" and did the only thing they really could: not play baseball.
We're so quick to put down athletes but we should give props where props are due.
