I don't know if this is something they're doing at all the Subways or just the one I go to, but I've noticed some really counterintuitive marketing at the one I go to.

When you go to a fast food type place, obviously the guy selling the stuff is trying to suggest other stuff you can buy too. Now Subway has a $5 for any footlong that's not Premium. They usually suggest that if you're getting the 6 inch sub, but most people get the footlong anyway since it's a no brainer to get a $5 for footlong if the 6 inch stuff is $4. So this part rarely has to be suggested.

Now what can you add to your sandwich that generates extra revenue? If you look at the menu it's:

1. Bacon.
2. Double meat.
3. Extra Cheese.
4. Avocado.

Every time I go to a Subway, the guy selling this stuff will dutifully ask all 4 question to every single person. I'd say from my observation, 99% of the time the first 3 results in a 'no'. Let's think about what's going on. The guy probably already bought a footlong (since they're $5). Chances are you don't need extra meat on top of footlong, because that's a lot of food. Subway is usually perceived as a 'healthy' fast food, so you don't really want to get extra cheese and especially bacon. I'd say that it is highly unlikely anybody is ever persuaded into buying items #1-#3 just because it was suggested. Avocadoes may or may not work, but at least I've seen people who says they want avocadoes compared to the first 3.

And when you're done with your sandwich, they generally only ask you once on 'do you want to make this a combo', even though everyone knows fast food places make most of the money on the soft drink. If they apply the same vigor to the sandwich, it should be something like:

1. Do you want a cookie?
2. Do you want chips?
3. Coke?
4. Sprite?
5. Bottled Water?
6. Something else?
7. Are you really sure?

I mean, if I was trying to generate revenue, it seems to me trying to sell another soft drink for $1 is going to be far better than selling double meat for $1. Certainly I cannot recall a time seeing someone actually got extra bacon/cheese/meat in a Subway, so it must not work very often.

I know some people will say it's good as long as they make you think about it, but I don't think the 'any publicity is better than no publicity' is a good thing. If sufficiently annoyed I might go to a different Subway, or just a different fast food altogether. In fact whenever I go there I dread having to answer 'no' 4 times in a row. Most normal fast food only suggest one item plus the reasonable stuff (e.g. you get a combo, they ask you if you want to super size it), and I'm fine with that.

Subway is a franchise, so things are bound to be a little different in each one. It's possible the ones you are going into are all owned by the same person, so they do the same things.

For me, I don't have to answer a barrage of questions that I say "no" to get a sandwich. Granted, the guy getting a 12" veggie patty probably doesn't want double-bacon, so there's no point in asking. But I don't see other people going through it, and when it comes time to check out, all I get is "Do you want a drink or to make a combo?"

I suspect the one I go to is run differently from the norm. Whenever anybody walks in all the employees immediately stop what they're doing and say "Welcome to Subway's" and I know this isn't done at all the Subways. And they definitely ask if you want bacon/extra meat/extra cheese on every sandwich, though I don't think I've been next to someone getting a vegetable patty to verify if they'll ask that on something without meat. But looking at the way they do it, I'm sure they're trained to just say that on every sandwich. When I get my sandwich I told them 'only lettuce and nothing else' and still ask me if I want avocado, so I'm pretty sure they just ask that regardless.

Two things:

Their monkey ads on television are endlessly annoying to me.

Probably a regional thing: at a certain time of year you can get a lobster sub here. It's $12 for a footlong and $24 for a footlong with double the lobster. Who in their right mind would spend $24 on a Subway sub?

I love Subway and will put up with the marketing hassle for a delectable cheesesteak sandwich with green peppers, onions, lettuce, tomato, and jalapenos anyday.

Fun fact: my cousin's wife attended a conference with some Subway executives, and they're required to have the "Five dollar foootloooooong" tune as their ringtone.

That would make me almost instantly insane. I would take my phone and drive it into the head marketer's heart.

I'm loving the $5 Footlongs. I'll usually do Tuna or Turkey and eat 1/2 at lunch and the other 1/2 for dinner then hit the gym

The only thing my subway asks is do I want Soda and Chips, which is always a no answer for me.

I think this has been a very successful marketing campaign for them, look at Quiznos, they dropped the prices on their subs as a result to try to compete.

I just thought of something. The Veggie Delite is listed as $4.79 or so for footlong on the Subway menu. Would they charge you $5 for the footlong now?

If that were the case, I'd change the ringtone on my (non-existent) cell to be a Stewie "Damn You!" scream whenever anyone from work called :-)

Subway is sooo behind the market. The quality of the subs is shitty compared to other places. Nobody should give a shit about their subs. Here's where you should go instead of Subway:

Cold Subs: Jimmy Johns - These guys illustrate the best way to run a fast food place. They understand that fast food must be fast. I mean, I walk in, order my sub, and BEFORE I'M FINISHED WITH MY CREDIT CARD TRANSACTION, one of the guys from the sandwich line hands me my sub. It's right there, and it takes less than a minute to make my sub. Plus, it's the best place for a cold sub, with really good bread.

Hot Subs:
Quiznos - Still one of the best, and still has a lot of variety. Only sub place I know that has a pepper bar with a ton of different sauces.
Jersey Mike's - Probably has the best cheese steak sub around. Good selection of hot and cold subs, but I mainly come for the Chipotle cheese steak.

Quiznos is good. They became reasonably priced after the price readjustment a couple of years ago. Before that they were far too expensive. I guess McDonalds realized they had priced themselves out of the market.

Better than their old slogan: "When losing weight: Subway goes hand in hand with Aids."
