But isn't that what freedom of speech is all about? If pro-gay ads are allowed, don't anti-gay ones have the same right?

*ducks*

Sure. And I have the freedom of speech to fucking call for a boycott of the NFL and CBS too and their policies of hate. This isn't illegal, it's just hateful.

They can do this if they want! Waste their fucking money. I'm still gonna pitch a shitfit.

This makes me so mad I'm listening to Dre and Cube's "Natural Born Killas" and thinking Dre doesn't sound nearly angry enough. I am about as mad as Cube is on that track, though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the group that bought the time slot appears to be an anti-gay, ultra conservative Christian group.

The details about what the ad will be about are unclear, something about Tim "Jesus" Tebow and his mother. No where in the article does is explicitly say that the advertisement they plan to air will deliver an "anti-gay" message.

I highly doubt you'd get a straight up antigay commercial air during the Super Bowl, nobody wants that kind of publicity, and CBS would most definitely veto any ad of that type. Hell I think PETA got denied a few commericals last year.

I hope you're right, but I think this is serious and going to happen.

I think if ever there were a true Jesus, that he would not waste his time on persecuting homosexuals even if he didn't agree with it. It achieves nothing in the area of spiritual growth to create rifts against a class of people who are who they are. I doubt Jesus would care about pro-gay commercials.

On the otherhand, those who use the name of Jesus and his school of thought as the title of justice to spread hatred and persecution against gays... Well at least according to the bible (the hypocrites passage) he would be very against such people.

It is not a matter of a freedom of speech when it negatively impacts an entire identifiable group of people for no good reason other than silly beliefs based only on negativity. It doesn't take Jesus to see the difference between speech to promote a greater comfort zone among peoples who have no reason to fear each other, and promotion of discomfort that could lead to persecution.

Jesus hung out and practiced compassion with outcasts, lepers, and heretics - the freaks and "queer" people of his day. I have every faith there were probably gay people among his followers, but Leviticus is a fucked up book and enables a lot of bullies and probably always has. That's just kind of how I feel about it...

I think it's worth making the distinction that this is not an "antigay ad", but an ad made by a group which is prominently against homosexuality. I doubt the ad itself will mention homosexuality at all.

You have this tendency to post the same exact thing I post in either the same thread, or make a post about some news that I already posted. And you do this alllllllllll the time. :p

What exactly do you two think WILL be in this ad? If I can ask...FotF is not exactly known for subtlety in this arena, guys.

Eric, that goes for you too. I'm not sure you all realize exactly how terrified Dobson and his fellow nuts are of "buggery", or a similar concept. :P

I suspect it will be just as they said: some heartwarming, life-affirming story which they will connect to their faith. It will end with a narration that says "Focus on the Family, putting family and faith first in America" or something like that. Then it will invite viewers to learn more about them at their website.

They know better to make an ad that says "teh gayz gon' get u." CBS probably wouldn't air it, and it doesn't make them look like good guys. An ad like the one I described makes you associate the organization with this heart-warming story. Then when you learn their positions - such as that on gay marriage - they've already controlled the context.

I understand fully how they view homosexuality. But I also know they're not stupid. Effective propaganda that is safe for prime-time tv is much like corporate-speak: you have to get your message across without explicitly stating it. People who know the code can see through it.

Yes, I agree. I Kup (ie. very quickly skim and not really read) many threads quite regularly :-)
