Obama To Dems: GOP Doesn't Have A 41-59 Majority

Fucking Christ, man! I really wish the guy would stop fucking with this bipartian bullshit. THE GOP IS NOT GOING TO LET YOU IN THE CAR!!!

Also, the Republicans have filibustered more in the last year than anybody has filibustered in the 60's and 70's. That's 20 years, compared to 1 year. Oh, and the Senate blew their chance to remove the filibuster with a simple majority. Thanks a lot, Harry spineless shit for brains Reid!

Seriously,

My opinion is that all of these politicans are career politicans who do not have MY best interest as a VOTER and a TAX PAYER! All of them should go the way of the dodo and become exticint. The problem is the lobbyists who have a strangle hold over the government. Out law lobbying you free up the politicans to actually be influenced by the people. All lobbyists should be locked up and tried for treason. Career politicans should be tried for corruption. The house of representatives is run by a bunch of loons. Nancy Pelosi is on more drugs than Aetna can perscribe to her. This is why we will have some sort of politcial/violent uprising either the next time a natrual disaster occurs or another successful terrorist attack occurs. The problem is that the political parties in this nation have divided it. You are either democrat or republican just like during the civil war, you are north or south. We are very close to having a conflict here. I hear nightly that banks are getting robbed when 5 years ago a bank robbery would have gone down something along the lines of a michael mann film. Desperate times call for desparate mesures and 1 out of every 10 americans is that desperate. The system is broken, the public has been saying that for years. The government is broken, the media refuses to acknowledge that. The way we do buisness is broken, and that is evident by this recession which is FAR from over.

What this is proving is that there are tons of Democrats who dislike him, too. He talks like he wants to shake things up and seems to actually try to do it as much as he can. That ain't good news for any career politician, Dem or Repub. You honestly think there aren't tons of Dem politicians who ain't getting fat off of medical lobby money?

There are too many people from both parties trying to undermine his presidency. It's a war he won't win even if he does win so even if he does get the next election, he still won't get nothin' done. You almost need someone after him to carry on the same fight before you can break that old boys club up. But then again, maybe it's time to vote senators and congressmen in who wanna shake things up too? That, at least, you guys have some power over and will have a direct impact on things.

And you Americans can at least go to sleep at night a) knowing who your senators are and b) actually being able to vote them in and out. We ain't so lucky.

Huh? Why do you think we should vote for the royal representatives as well as the commons? How is that a good thing? How is our current system make us less lucky than the US?

You sound like one of Harper's trolls who want to turn Canada into America Junior.

Okay, now that you're done with your rant: What the hell does that have to do with the filibuster?
Zeus wrote:What this is proving is that there are tons of Democrats who dislike him, too. He talks like he wants to shake things up and seems to actually try to do it as much as he can. That ain't good news for any career politician, Dem or Repub.
Both sides are bad. So vote Republican!

Again, WTF does this have to do with the filibuster? Most democrats are actually trying to get things passed, but it gets stuck in the senate. Why? Because with the Republicans filibustering EVERY bill, you need 60 votes to closure and actually vote on the bill.

Just look at the records. Good bills have passed the House, but get stuck on the senate. Obama said no less than three times in his SOTU speech about a bill that passed the house but not the senate.

Meanwhile, Obama is trying to encourage bipartianship. Hell, Democrats could even go for it. However, the Republicans are united in destroying everything and blocking every bill just to make Obama fail. And it's working.

People blame Democrats, just like you Zeus, and you Barret, on not getting anything done, but very few people understand what is ACTUALLY going on. The Republicans are ruining everything. The filibuster needs to be destroyed. It no longer serves a purpose. Not even Democrats used the filibuster to the effect that it's being used now. And since you no longer need to actually speak to enforce a filibuster, it's even easier to do. You simply vote no on closure and walk away.

Oh, so basically, they're bipassing democracy because they can. Sorry, didn't know that, I thought you system always worked on a 51% majority, not a 60% one. That sounds like the bullshit democratic process we had a few years ago with proportionate representation.

Obama would be dead wrong, then, the Republicans do have a 41% majority. So his entire presidency is going to be undermined by the minority of senators. And if the Republicans are united solely in destroying him as opposed to actually voting on the merits of the bill, what difference will it make if he encourages bipartisanship?

One would think that you would at least have to offer reason or explanation for a pro-republican statement like the one you made. Especially when it is against a core national tradition which dates back to the founding of the country and with far deeper roots than that.

The senate in Canada serves no purpose other than to allow governments, if they are lucky enough, to stack open senate seats with their own interests.

If this body of government is able to yay or nay legislation, they should be elected, period. The fact that they mostly just 'yay' everything that the lower house passes shows how irrelivant they are in today's political landscape.

The Canadian senate is a waste of taxpayer dollars, and is generally ineffective in checking the lower house. Either we should start electing them, or get rid of them all together.

If I thought there was a prayer that you would actually read what I said and address it objectively, I would have spent the time and effort giving you a far more than adequate explanation. But as it stands, that post along with your follow-up post deserve only this:

It's typically the opposite with the US. The House is usually panned for passing anything, and the Senate are the gatekeepers. However, the Senate has such fucked up rules, such as the filibuster, than the gatekeeping is working TOO well, and blocking good bills.

And from my POV, the House is the better branch of Congress. It doesn't seem to me like they pass anything.

I doubt there's a prayer that you have any idea as to what you are talking about.

And this confirms it.

This doesn't answer the question, it doesn't state how the alternative is beneficial to anything, nor does it explain any justification in overturning our government. It only expands on your sorry point that I was questioning in the first place.

In other words, the fact that you not only needed a guy living close to the core of republican thought in Canada to expand on the point, but also that you feel those accusations sufficiently answers the question proves to me that you do not know what you are talking about.

Wait, who lives close to the core of republican thought in Canada? I hope you just mean geographically (and if so, what does it have to do with my comment/opinion?).

Saskatchewan is the home of the NDP (CCF), conservative opinion and western seperational thought is something more of an Alberta mentality. Looking at Saskatchewan/Alberta in terms of their voting habits in contemporary times is missing the point, especially with how similar the liberal and conservative parties are in ideology.
