The guy who got upset at me because the USB cable didn't come with the printer. He didn't figure this out until he unpacked it despite the large letters saying "USB Cable Not Included" on the outside of the packaging. "So that's how you do business?" he asked. "I've got half a mind to just take this thing back! And you're charging me for this phone call!" "I'm not charging you a penny, sir. Your long-distance company is." "Well, you're making me pay. Most decent companies have 800 numbers."
The guy had no right to get upset with technical support, but I do think his complaint with the company is justified. Yes, it says so on the box, but this is a new phenomenon. When people buy a printer, they expect to be able to use the printer without having to buy anything else. I think this is a reasonable assumption, and I don't fault someone for being surprised to find out this is not the case. Many people won't know what a USB cable is.
And yeah, a tech help line should be free.
