<div style='font: 12pt ; text-align: left; '>The East and the Western Empires split after the death of Theodosius the great (which had some mystery behind it, he might have been murdered). On one side was Honourius and on the other was Arcadius. In the middle you have a non-Roman Alaric. Alaric began as a rebel against the Empire, but later alligned himself with the East. Because of politics, and of course the Empire, no one would dream of having East Romans and West Romans face each other directly in battle, so Alaric was used by the East to fight hte West. As a result, the East gained more territories. Yet the West had a great General, one of the greatest in Roman history, Stilicho. Stilicho fought Alaric with relative success, and defeated him in several battles. However, Honorius seeing that Stilicho had gained a lot of fame grew jealous, and found a reason which to execute him. Being the honourable and dutiful general he was, Stilicho turned himself in and was judged guilty, and therefore was executed. Around the same time Emperor Arcadius mysteriously died. The one who replaced him was allied to Honourius, the Empire as a whole declared on the Germans. Alaric, with no great Western General to stop him, was able to overun the Legions of both the Eastern and Western Empires. He was the first General to capture the city of Rome in hundreds of years, and he placed himself in the position of Overlord of the Roman Empire. So fell Rome. It was not due to the Romans thinking themselves invincible, it was because of corruption. On a side note, FFT is loosely based on this story.
The Brits on the otherhand, they were in a position where they had to fight the Germans or else the Germans would have taken over everything. They defeated the German second Reich, and they were forced into war against the German third reich when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939. France and Great Britain declared war on Germany immediately. France fell at the end of the summer in 1940, Britain being on an Island was lucky, they were able to defend against the Germans, if it hadn't been for this case, Germany would have easily conquered them as they had with most of the rest of Europe. Had the British not declared on Germany at this time, Germany would have eventually got around to declaring on the UK anyways, only at that point in time, they would have developed ICBMs with nuclear payloads, the miracle weapon. Though the Brits and Americans would have also had nuclear capabilities, their ability to deploy them would be far behind the Germans. Missile technology was developed by the Germans, both short range and long range, it wasn't until the fall of Germany and the capture of German scientists that the Americans, Brits, French, and the Soviets were able to acquire missile technology. Given the opportunity, Germany would be able to force the surrender of the British, they would have had the capability to nuke London, Washington, Moscow, and any other city they wanted without fear of retaliation. The mistake that the Germans made in WWII was invading the Soviet Union; they had repeated the devastating mistake Napoleon had made 125 years earlier by sending the major part of their military against the Russians. The battle of Stalingrad in 1943 was the winning goal for the allies. Anyways, after this war, the British did not have the money to maintain the Empire which they had once had, they had run out of resources, and they had no way of recovering it all. Of course WWII wasn't the only cause, the Great Depression was also a heavy blow against them, and them especially considering they were at the top. War with Germany could not be avided, it would have come sooner or later; and Germany was the most powerful nation in the world by far at that point. In comparisson for their time, they were more powerful than the Americans are now militarilly.</div>
