Zeus wrote:At the end of the day, what this means to me is that the new format requires a substantial amount extra effort as compared to the old one. As I have mentioned in the past, I don't have a lot of free time and often come here for 5-10 minutes at a time as a little break. Now, that's turned into the time for one forum versus the entire site. Thus, I will only be able to post about 1/5th as much as before, becoming more of a fringe player than I used to be. It might go up in the weekend, if I have extra time, but during the week, it'll be MUCH less.
I have no idea how it takes you that long to scan this new format for new posts. It takes me 1/2 the time than it did with the old version. With the new posts markers and such, I can check out every new post within 5 minutes easily.

Be honest. Are you seriously giving this new version a chance or just assuming it's too much effort and not even bothering to adjust?

Honestly, I think the fact that there are less threads is just an illusion. Since we don't have the format that stretch to several pages just on a few threads with posts, it only seems like there are less posts.

The first page of Daily Stuph now consists entirely of new threads. It's been about a week since the change. I think we'll be fine.

agreed, again. threads on the old board vs. this one are a completely and utterly indequate metric for what we're talking about. there's no real way to compare.

Well, for instance, in order to check out which new replies there were for this thread, I clicked on the "last reply" link, then went to the top, realized that my reply that everyone was replying to was on the previous page, clicked "Previous", scrolled way back down to where my reply was, then followed the replies through to the last one. Luckily, there was no other tangent in the conversation, so it was just linear.

In the old format, this would simply had taken a glance from my post down since all replies were indented. If there was a body to one of the posts and I cared, I'd click and look (very rare). That, right there, is a savings of approximately one minute, and it's just one thread. This is what i'm referring to.

Since I don't know how to quote properly (have the whole "Lox wrote" with the quote), I'll reply here. Lox, I've used this format before, when I've been surfing around trying to figure things out (ie. DVD formatting). I just flat out don't like it. It's not like this is completely new to me. But it seems that most of you like it, so I'll just deal with it. Besides, it's Sine's board and he can do what he wants. I've already voiced my opinion.

quoting format:
Code: Select all
[quote="Lox"]blah blah, I'm dumb[/quote]
should end up looking like this:
Lox wrote:blah blah, I'm dumb
Remember the quotes around the person's name.

And, yes, Lox did say that.

I'm not used to the new format yet either, but I'll stick around as this is now the 3rd incarnation of the board I've lived through.

I still like the old board better, but that may be because I became so accustomed to it.

I'm html illiterate, I see if that works.[/quote]

Let me test that out:
Gentz wrote:Boy am I gay. And lame. In fact, I'm surprised no one here has discovered just how gay and lame I am. Not to mention the fact that I have a face that only Ish would love. ie: I'm the ugliest woma....I mean man on Earth. Yes....man....I'm a man....that's it.

Wow. Interesting. Let's see what Ish has to say about that...
Ish wrote:Lox has a lot of displaced anger since I told him he could no longer serve as my dungeon-sex slave. Pay no attention to his incoherent ramblings. Also, my real voice is that of an 8 year old girl
Well, that pretty much says it all. And what a shocking revelation at the end! :)

You're talking about a rare case there. Given the short size of a full page 18KB, I'll go ahead and double the amount of Posts Per Page.

You're purposely ignoring the problems with the old format. The same indentation totally breaks down on big threads

See, this proves Lox's point. You're not even trying. There's a quote button right there to quote somebody's message. That was pretty much how it worked on RPGBoard, but it's a lot more robust here because you can quote other people.

You know, I love how not only does it say "Lox wrote", but it uses the right colors, too.

I thought that was cool too. Is it possible to implement selectable quoting? ie, let us select the text we want to quote and then when we click quote, it only uses that text? Like I only wanted this sentence from yours so I had to quote the whole thing, then delete 95% of it. It's not a big issue really, but it'd be a nice little convenience. :)

When I did it, I just selected and copied the text I wanted. Maybe I did it weird though. As I said, even simple HTML confounds me.

You're talking about some sort of Javascript voodoo that checks for any highlighted text, and then passes that as an argument to the quote button. For one, the last security hack was a highlight passing bug, so I don't want to pass a potentially large and freeform argument to the script. Also, you can do the same thing in the topic review by copy&paste the sentence and put the quote tags around it.

It has nothing to do with ignoring the old problems, they're just WAAAAY less than the ones with this one

This proves only that my ass is hairy. I tried a few times to use it, but didn't know how to get it right. Even the tutorial up above didn't tell me about the button above each post automatically going to your reply. You'll be shocked to know that I actually found the "Preview" button all on my own and that I'm nice and grown up now.

On the old board, I never need to know how to use the quote since you never actually needed it to follow the conversation.

Ummm, yay?

At the end of the day, I just don't like it and I'm disliking it the more I use it. But I'm in the minority and this is your site, so who cares?

But that requies me typing the quote tags around the text myself. I want to be lazy here! :)
