For people wanting to develop games + move to Canada

There were some posts about this earlier, I forget exactly who was involved. Anyways, it should be noted that Canada is a very large location for videogame developers and is responsible for many of the most critically acclaimed games released outside of Japan. Quebec is the main location, though you'd have to learn Quebecois; a derivative of French which is actually closer to what the French language was in earlier times. Quebecers are not the same as typical French, Quebecers are fairly friendly, and their women are quite charming. The settlers in Quebec were essentially French soldiers and hot women, so they look better than typical French people; and they don't just slap like sissies, Quebecers are some of the toughest mofos on the planet. Well, I wouldn't worry too much about organized Crime, but Quebec is the unofficial home of the Hells Angels.

Vancouver and Toronto are two other major places. Vancouver is often rated the #1 best city in the world to live in. Toronto is also very high up, as is Montreal. The major diffierence between Canadian and American cities is that Canadian cities are somewhat newer looking. It is difficult to explain, but they're not filled with buildings that looked like they were built back in the 40's and 50's, they're filled with buildings that looked like they were built in 2030; particularly true of Vancouver; Montreal and Toronto are older cities, but still very very nice.

VANCOUVER:

EA Canada - The largest Studio outside of Japan, also the largest development studio within the Electronic Arts Corporation. Responsible for the following game series': SSX, Fifa soccer, NHL, James Bond 007, Need for Speed, Def Jam, NBA Live, MVP Baseball, Knockout Kings, etc....

Blackbox - Another development studio owned by Electronic Arts; used to develop for Sega and Midway. NHL 2K, NHL Hitz, Sega Soccer Slam, and also any Need for Speed games that EA Canada doesn't work on.

Relic Entertainment - A company which has developed some benchmark PC titles such as the Homeworld series, Dawn of War, The Outfit, and Impossible Creatures. Currently a subsidary of THQ.

Radical Entertainment - That new Scarface game for PS2 that looks awesome, Simpsons Hit and Run, Simpsons Road Rage, Dark Summit, CSI series, Crash Tag Team Racing, Hulk games. It is a development stuio owned by Vivendi.

EDMONTON:

Bioware - This is a company which has some VERY highly praised game engines. They are very well known for creating good game engines similar to ID software. One of the most highly acclaimed developers in the world. Some of their games include: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, Shattered Steel, MDK2, Icewind Dale, Planetscape, etc.

TORONTO:

Silicon Knights: Known for some really great games. Personally, Eternal Darkness is my favourite, ever, there are just so many elements I love in it including world history, mythology, science fiction, surreal, etc.. Games include: Metal Gear Solid, Eternal Darkness, Dark Legions (that cool chess game), Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Too Human.

Digital Extremes - their claim to fame is the Unreal Engine and the Unreal games.

MONTREAL:

Ubisoft Montreal - Canada's second largest development team, and the main development studio for the company. This is also one of my personal favourite development teams in the world. Responsible for games and series' such as: Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, latest Batman games, Far Cry, Rainbow Six 3, Peter Jackson's King Kong, Open Season, Tarzan Untamed, Assassin's Creed, Starwars games on GBA and DS, and Lost.

A2M - Responsible for a couple dozen game series based on North American TV shows (such as Scooby Doo, Carmen Sandiego, etc..).

There are about 25 other notable developers within Montreal, but I have to wrap this post up quickly because I have to get going.

That would have been me, Seek.

I do appreciate the rundown, though do I note that you're missing a lot of the smaller studios...

Not that I'm unappreciative of the effort, but I'm a bit curious as to why you took all this time to try to help me? Especially since I didn't post any sort of requests for information, as far as I can recall...I just stated a desire to possibly move and live there at some point...

Anyway, thanks for the info.

I had time to kill for a while, figure I might as well post a more extensive reply on posts written a while ago. I don't really know about the smaller studios unless they have done something significant like Silicon Knights.

I have a friend at Ubisoft in Montreal who can give me some tips on applying there, if you care
