For those not familiar with the IFL (International Fight League), it is a new mixed martial arts promotion (Which began in April of this year) with a very interesting concept. Rather than having the focus on just a single 1 vs 1 match, the focus is instead placed on teams of five fighters. So each event will place one team of 5 vs another team of 5, and they will have 5 fights, the team that wins at least 3 of the 5 fights wins the event.
At this point in time there are teams based in Canada, the US, and Japan. Most of the teams are from the US at this point in time, but the goal is to have a much greater International balance, there are currently 4 additional teams planned for the league, which will be from outside of the United States.
With this concept, it is similar to the Ultimate Fighter in that obviously the stars are the team coaches. As can be seen, a lot of the coaches are legends in the sport. There have been several superfights which consist of two team coaches, including an upcoming fight of Carlos Newton (Toronto)vs. Renzo Gracie (New York). A superfight, by definition in the IFL, is any fight not directly associated with team vs team competition, they do not count towards team scores.
