Holy fuck. This is another example of why cops should not have tasers, they go on a powertrip and think they can get away with anything. This is not the first time something like this has happened either. Well, this is going to blow up larger than Rodney King.

Yes, because some officers abuse something none of them should have it for protection. Right.

Of course, there isn't enough video here to even show why they tazed him in the first place unless I missed it. I'd want to know that before assuming they were wrong. Just listening to him scream profanities isn't enough to convince me.

Police use stun gun on UCLA student who won't leave library
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - A camera phone captured a UCLA student being shocked with a stun gun by a police officer after he allegedly refused repeated requests to show his student identification and would not leave a campus library, university police said Wednesday.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday after police did a routine check of student identifications at the University of California, Los Angeles' Powell Library computer lab.

"This is a long-standing library policy to ensure the safety of students during the late-night hours," said UCLA Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.

She said police tried to escort Mostafa Tabatabainejad, 23, out of the library after he refused to provide ID and would not leave.

Tabatabainejad, who was arrested for resisting and obstructing a police officer, was later released on his own recognizance.

"As the officers attempted to escort him out, he went limp and continued to refuse to cooperate with officers or leave the building," Greenstein said.

Instead, Greenstein said, Tabatabainejad encouraged others at the library to join his resistance. When a crowd began to gather they used the stun gun on him.

The arrest was recorded on another student's camera phone and showed Tabatabainejad screaming while on the floor of the computer lab. The video also showed the student shouting, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your ... abuse of power," according to the campus newspaper, the Daily Bruin.

There is no phone listing for Tabatabainejad and neither he nor his attorney could be located for comment.

Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams promised that an investigation of the incident and the officer's action will be "thorough, vigorous and fair."

"The safety of our campus community is of paramount importance to me," Abrams said in a statement.

Ok, maybe tasing was a bit much, but he asked for something to happen by acting like a prick. Show your ID or leave. Don't go limp and pretend you're Ghandi. Don't invite others to follow your crappy example. Do what the officers say.

I read the article linked off of the video:

I have difficulty buying the reasoning given for tasing him. I don't think being uncooperative is enough justification to tase someone. A taser should be used for self-defense only. I doubt the police felt threatened. Further, tasing someone and then telling them to get up is counterproductive. If he won't get up, then get two cops, pick him up and carry him out.

That was what i thought, too. What does tasing him do when he is already on the ground unwilling to move? It makes no sense. It sounds like he made no threats or threatening gestures.

The question here is about when tasering is warranted...

He was asked for ID, refused, and then refused to leave the library. Poor place to make a stand against the Patriot Act...yet I fail to see how this has to do with it. This was a college law-- only college students may use the college library.

In short-- the kid was an idiot, and the police abused their power. Nothing new...just need some legislation on when tasering is warranted cause like it's been said it shouldn't be used so freely.

Yeah, basically how I feel. Tasing was more than they should have done, but I don't feel sorry for him at all. In fact, after he started screaming at the top of his lungs I was just hoping they'd tase him again and shut him up.
