Merry Christmas

Or whichever day it is that you celebrate. "Christmas" today is the most popular winter festival, but it has a very long history which long predates the Christian celebration. In fact, the 25th is not only celebrated by Christians as the birthdate for the Messiah.
Saturnalia ends tonight, it was a 7 day celebration of the ancient Romans which involved a lot of drinking, and public orgies. It began on the 17th of December.
The Syrian God Elah-Gabal, which later became merged with Apollo and Mithras to form Sol Invictus (The Unconquered Sun) was also born on the 25th of December.
Mithras, a very ancient Aryan God who is several thousand years older than Christianity; is prophesized to be born to Earth on the 25th of December. Mithras is the Greek name for the original Messiah (Also known as Mitra, Mitra, Meshia, Maitreya, and Messiah), they all involve a saviour sent from the Gods or God to mankind who is very enlightened, and will lead mankind to a new state of thinking.
In the ancient Germanic cultures, the day of Yule was celebrated on the 25th; most notably those who celebrated it were the Goths and the Svear, though hints of it have been found all throughout ancient Germanic culturues, including the Icelanders. Yule is the word that the Swedes use for Christmas Day, still. The idea of Christmas Ham originated in this culture as well, the feast of the Ham was originally to celebrate the God Freyr.
The Germanic tribes and the Persians (where all the other Solstice and Messiahtic holidays originated from) have very similar ancient holidays; they both likely originated from the same place. The Aryan invasion theory (which is not popular since the Nazi period) suggests that a group of "Indo-European speakers spread their language and culture from Scandinavia through to the Indian sub-continent (and through Persia) in ancient days; the Indians and Persians both have ancient traditions which agree with this theory) the languages and cultures later spread westward across the continent of Europe (there were previously other languages which were not compatable, this includes Linear A, and Estrucan, which we cannot decipher). The order of Gods known as the Aesir have the same etymological origins as the Asira (Aesira, Asirsa), which led to the Persian/Indian order called the Ahura, and eventually the single Zoroastrian God Ahura Mazda.
So, as an Indo-European celebration, Christmas, as we call it today, is actually quite an ancient cleebration which goes back far earlier than the 4th century AD when the day became celebrated the way it did.
Easter, which originally fell on the Equinox, is an entirely different story which shares in the same ancient traditions.
