That link doesn't work right now - but I've heard conflicting things. I thought Vivid was supporting Blu Ray...?
Ultimately, two things will drive the mass market adoption of the next gen format. Porn - yes. Also piracy.
A little bit of piracy actually will help, as silly as that sounds...

Both will be LDs man. One may survive as a storage device on comps or something, but they're dead when it comes to the DVD market IMO

If Sony won't allow porn on Blu-Ray, they really are going to get themselves killed, I think.
I dunno. They can do what they want, of course, but that would seem unwise in the extreme, in a business sense.

And piracy. If I can't pirate the DVDs, I don't want to bother. Call me a criminal or something, but buying a $20 DVD to watch it once or twice is kinda insane to me. Yeah, we got Netflix at least.

I just think it's too early for another format switch. I have tons of DVDs and a lot of people have large DVD collections. Hell, my mom has a DVD player. Most people across the spectrum won't want to bother with the upgrade as they just don't care (like my mom) or they don't want to replace their current collection (like me). Not talking about the piracy issue here.
Really, they're only for the videophiles, which is a small group. They'll have the success of LD and one or both may end up as storage devices, but I doubt that with the insanely fast price drops of the USB drives and memory sticks. Heck, you can get a 4GB one now for under $100 Cdn; I saw a 4GB SD card for $40 Cdn. Considering a lot of TVs have the card readers, these things may eventually put DVD-Rs as a movie burning format to pasture.

I agree...it's 5 years too early for these formats and most people don't care (yet). Digital Distribution is the way of the future anyway...
That said...
King Kong looks fucking amazing in HDDVD...but aside from that, I haven't seen anything that truely justifies the jump (also bought Batman Begins, Casino and Constantine).
Personally, I'm pulling for HDDVD if anything - just because of more ease of piracy and PC friendliness (like DVDs, I want to burn the shit I rent and buy the titles I truely want).

Buying a $20 DVD to watch once or twice is stupid. I rent those movies. I only buy movies I know I like and I know I will want to watch many times over the years.

But what about the $5 ones? When you buy majority used like I do, you can get the vast majority of your movies for under $12 Cdn nowadays (constitute about 70%+ of my non-boxset purchases). It's the new ones that you pay for that you want with that rule, but the cheaper ones you can still just watch once or twice over the years and have it worth it. I just got Universal Soldier for $5 from Walmart. I'll likely only watch that once or twice over the years (and I am guilty of having some movies I haven't seen yet), so it's worth it.

On principal, I only buy DVDs I think I'll watch many times. Even the cheapo ones. I have, of course, made some mistakes. (Mission Impossible? Oh how I loved you when I was 14.)

I saw Alexander in the theaters, stoned. That made it bearable. Mainly because half the time I was thinking "These nachos and cheese are fucking awesome."
My thing with being selective about buying DVDs, even cheap ones, is I just don't want superfluous crap.

That's coo. My justification of collecting my DVDs and games is that I'm not very frivolous about all my other expenditures. Cheap clothes, shop around for food, don't really buy alcohol or coffee (or anything else that's addictive), don't eat out much, etc.
Whatever gives you the joy, that's it
