Anyone use Zune for the 360?

With Tversity, it just separates the mp3s by genre, album, etc., ONLY if the ID3 tag is fully completed. You can't select by folder which is irritating as hell considering no one bothers filling those things out anymore (i'm missing well over half my songs unless I go to the "all songs" option). Is Zune this way or can you actually select the folder where your songs are?

This is the main reason I haven't switched to iTunes, or an iTunes-like system. Most of my mp3s aren't properly tagged. All of my recent music is, because I just ripped it off of a CD I bought, and most ripping software will insert the proper tags now.

iTunes is such a ripoff. I use a little Sansa Express for my mp3's and signed up for Yahoo Music. For like $50 a year i can DL all i want. I've had it for under a year and have 1000's of songs. Granted, i'm stuck paying 50 a year for as long as i want music, but i like the freedom of not paying $1 a song, or buying CD's, or stealing.

Coo, thanks. I was wondering if I need to use Zune as well just for mp3s. TVersity still works great as a media server other than the occasional file that it won't convert. But it's still in beta, I can live with that

Do you need to do anything special to have the 360 recognize TVersity? I was having some problems even getting the files to appear. I wonder if Zune conflicts with it or something.

if you use Windows media player 11 it grabs much of the information off of the internets for you. As long as you have like one field written in (song name, artist, album) it will track down all of the info. When you rip a CD it finds the information for you, and torrents usually have all the information filled out, or at least enough for WMP11 to find out all of the rest. Also, if you ever decide to buy a ps3, it works as a media server for it (at least through vista) in much the same way as the 360 does. Be prepared to re-encode some of that video though.... so in conclusion, WMP11 should throw the correct ID3 tag on your songs to make it workable with both the 360 and zune.

No but the 360 is a bit finicky with that interface. I find that you need to change the settings in TVersity to the 360 setting. Then you have to eliminate all other links to your computer (ie. Zune) and get it to search for a new link (ie. TVersity). After you've already started sharing, of course.

It took me a few tries to get it started but if you do a quick search for TVersity using Google, there's a good guide not from TVersity's website that takes you step by step through the process. They even show you how to get it to connect to the Wii / PS3 as well

Yeah, that's very true, but when you've got 1000 songs or more without ID3 tags, it becomes quite tedious to do that. It would be so much simpler if Microsoft just allowed you to search folders and add stuff to playlists like I can with everything else through TVersity.

Zune is also the Microsoft program use to stream stuff to the 360. I think it's technically called the Zune Player or some shit like that

I'm not into music enough to get an mp3 player. I use my PSP as one. Besides, I would never get that thing even if I did want and mp3 player

I had it at one point to stream stuff... worked alright, but TVersity is better (mainly cause I was doing video mostly)

Unfortunately, my experience with the 360 as media player suggests that unless you're actually running a fully configured version of Media Center, you have to use either the Zune or WMP 11 to play media on the 360.

Media Center actually allows you to download onto the 360, I believe, which is good, but the Zune/WMP interfaces only allow streaming. My subjective experience of both the Zune and WMP 11 interfaces for streaming playback is that they have been *really* inconvenient and not worth using - besides which, the Zune install does a lot of "updating" as far as codecs go, which can break the hell out of your existing system (my Napster stopped working for a good bit). Not recommended from my experience.
