ok I've been tasked by a pal of mine to find a good speach to text program. any of you guys know about any of these and know of any really good ones. Price really isn't a factor so even if it's like a kajillion dollars it still works.....anyne have any clues? It can be either mac or PC

You probably need to spend a million dollars to get a good one. Personally, I don't think the technology is there yet. Text to speech, on the other hand, has made some really good improvements. (NOAA is a perfect example.)

Dragon makes Naturally Speaking, I think, though it's anyone's guess how good it is and I cannot make a personal recommendation on it.

If you were a programmer, or if your pal were, I'd suggest downloading Microsoft's Speech SDK and writing your own...seriously. I have it, it's very snazzy.

lol this reminds me about when I was at a dr appt at an ear nose throat specialist. It was my first visit..so I wasnt aware of all the fancy "technology" they used in the office. All of the staff carried around laptops to the rooms when they visited..including the nurses.

When the Dr was done with me..I sat and waited while he started trying to talk into his mic that was pinned to his shirt for his speech to text program. He kept saying the date over and over because it wasnt registering: "June twenty eighth, two thousand seven, colon......June twenty eighth, two thousand seven, colon.....June twenty eighth, two thousand seven, colon....June twenty eighth, two thousand seven, colon"

It wasnt working...I was trying to keep myself from laughing.

He said it over and over about 15 times before he eventually got it to register.

There's no real point to my post...it just reminded me of that. :)

The biggest problem STT engines have, in my opinion, has less to do with recognition than noise cancelling. Was there any noise in that room, Seraph?

My voice dial on my LG handset works *beautifully* with my Bluetooth headset - as long as it's quiet. Better than I ever thought. But let one or two cars pass by and it's next to completely useless.

Honestly, I wish they'd just work on the noise cancelling for a bit, we'd actually have usable voice-dial systems.

No noise at all..it was a hearing doctor's office..it was very quiet....I don't know what the problem was.

After he got that initial problem fixed, it went smoothly..I was actually surprised how fast he was talking and it was picking it up.
