Windows Vista

My newest computer came with it. Despite all the negative things said about it in this forum, I am finding it vastly superior to Windows XP, or any other Window's OS for that matter. The first day or so I found it difficult to use, but I quickly broke it in and got used to the changes; and now I much prefer it. It has a much prettier set-up.
I think it is funny now that they manufacture computers in TBs, I remember clearly when I thought 8 GBs was gigantic =P
Well, I am giving Windows Vista a positive thumbs up.

Errr, that is both uncalled for and rather random. Did you have a point to prove other than demonstrating that you have the maturity of a 12 year old?

I remember when you didn't need a high-powered video card to run an OS. Now, you need the top-of-the-line video card just to have Vista do its pretty little moving menus and crap. Oh, those were the days when you could run things on 128MB of RAM.

I remember my first computer was an ultra-fast Pentium 66mHz with a massive 8 MB of ram and a likewise massive 512MB of hard drive space.
And truth be told, I am running Vista on this system as well, and am likewise not really having any problems with it.

When 1.44 MB floppy drives were all the storage space you'd need for software.

Holy crap guys... seriously wtf? We had a debate about Vista last month and Seek was giving his opinion HAVING ACTUALLY TRIED THE DAMNED PRODUCT unlike half of you dickbags.
And Sine-- you do not need close to top of the line graphics for Vista. Aero does have higher requirements but it's not even enabled by default, so good ol' onboard graphics cards can still easily handle Vista. Stop spinning shit.
As for throwbacks-- hell I remember my first computer: a 386DX2. The tower had a Turbo button that basically overclocked the CPU from 33mhz to 66mhz! And there was not even a FAN on the damned thing. Nowadays you need freakin liquid nitrogen to keep CPU's cool enough to do that
Seeker wrote:When 1.44 MB floppy drives were all the storage space you'd need for software.
No, I don't-- I do remember having to babysit installations of software by swapping out 5-20 disks though

vista really cuts into the framerates in my games. Well, I guess I only really play one game (Dawn of War.... <3) on my PC and it runs smoothly. However, for that instant that I played WOW it dropped down from 60fps to 30fps.
I was thinking about updating my videocard.... but PC gaming is dead or in cryo sleep or something.

I've only used Vista for about an hour total and my first impression was not positive. I'll need to give it more time before I make a final judgment but I won't be putting it on anything at home for a while, I think.
I don't know if this was just a flukey thing or what, but I was trying to activate my wife's aunt's DSL and Vista kept popping up "Restart your computer" windows even though I kept setting the delay to 40 minutes and saying "Postpone". Then I forgot and ate some lunch and came back and it had rebooted. That annoyed me. Argh.

I never said it didn't support Vista, dumbass, but WoW came out a good deal before Vista was out, so I didn't know if they bothered going back later and making it run in DX10.
DX10 still has issues-- it's well known that you take a noticable performance hit for using it. My laptop runs World in Conflict in DX10 mode at about 15fps whereas normal mode is 30+.
The reason I asked is because of that-- if you tell WoW not to use DX10 does it return to the original performance of non-vista machines?

So Vista is forced to use DX10, which is known to be buggy?

SineSwiper wrote:So Vista is forced to use DX10, which is known to be buggy?
You're not forced to use it, it's just the only OS that SUPPORTS it. You still need a DX10 supported card, AND then every game so far will give you the option of running in DX10 mode or not.
Wouldn't call DX10 buggy... just not efficient. They'll obviously have to fix it up before it's allowed to become defacto mainstream.

You'd think that all of these people would get together and get all of the bugs fixed and video cards supported on it BEFORE releasing it in the wild. There's too much of this idea that the general public is supposed to be your beta testers.

I agree, too often software is released before it's ready-- how many PC games in the past few years have had patches released BEFORE the damned game was on store shelves??
But in this case Vista != DX10

So... your only complaints are its hardware requirements and its compatibility issues?
XP made the same jump in requirements "OMG YOU NEED 256mb of memory?!" and took 2 SP's before it became stable and efficient like it is today. Vista hasn't even gotten one in yet so cut it some slack. If you don't have the hardware to run it well then don't bother running it.
As for compatibility... yeah, it's being worked on from both ends but at this point it's legacy stuff that has issues. I think it's supposed to be better in Vista SP1 but I've always said Vista has no place in a business environment anytime soon (same went for XP when it came out). I don't fault them for it though; this is because they basically rewrote Windows down to the core in order to make it more secure (mostly in ways a user won't notice-- but just compare the # of security patches released for XP vs Vista last year there's a huge difference) and hence a lot of programs have to update. If anything this will eventually force companies to stop using legacy software which is great.
You people have such short freakin memories and no one's forcing you to use the damned thing. There's really no reason to upgrade to Vista but if you buy a new home PC there's no reason to not get it. Because of Vista's requirements and compatibility issues I still wouldn't want to see it anywhere in an enterprise environment for another year, though.

While I agree that Vista isn't as terribly bad as some people may say, I'm never a fan of saying "things were bad before and because they're bad again you cannot complain". The interface isn't much prettier, the design isn't much more user friendly, and that retarded sidebar you can throw up is an enormous performance hog (well, when I took it down I was able to salvage more frames in my dawn of war matches). The sidebar also has just about the worst applications for it. Everything you can download is just bug ridden and nothing works properly in terms of user created content for the thing. Vista is out of its infancy, so it's sort of lame to see that it is still in a quagmire and still without a much needed service pack. Word is that pack is coming out soon, but what I'm trying to say is that you don't really get any sort of improvement over XP. You go from vanilla interface to vanilla interface with sprinkles. I wanted a butterscotch interface with chocolate sauce and sprinkles and a cherry and a waffle cone. Obviously my standards were too high.

Haha. The irony about your statement is that you were the one with the irrational emotional outburst that sounds both childish and nonsensical; a lot like the crying temper tantrum of a 3 year old girl. More than that, you are behaving pathetically delusional if you actually believe you are speaking for anyone else. Although there could actually be some psychological reason that you are referring to yourself in the plural. For all I know you could be more mentally troubled than Mental himself.

I've been running Vista on my desktop for almost a year now, so yes I'm quite knowledgeable with it. In ways you won't notice as in they went back and rewrote a lot shit under the hood so there wouldn't be 50 security patches every year like XP still has.
Vista has proven far more stable for me than any OS. I don't even know if Vista HAS blue screens anymore. The only thing annoying are those defender definition updates that come out every few days.
It adds more than you know-- but as I said there's no reason to upgrade yet, but no reason to downgrade if you get it. It has laid the foundation for a much better OS that is not quite needed YET. IPv6, DX10, and a shitload of other new technology are supported and just need to be utilized. The damned thing isn't without its faults but you complain like it's Windows ME or something. You don't like it, fine-- go back to XP for another year or two.

at this point yes. I am being a douchebag. the first was a playful jab. but I guess not liking vista turned it into something serious. sorry. I'll go back to giving bill gates a blowjob. then yes.
