Okay, you fuckers. I'm going to teach you how to fucking write a URL bbCode. This:

{url}http://blah/{/url}

Is wrong. In fact, it's stupid. Why the hell would you put in the fucking tags in the first place? You can just use the damn URL -without- the URL tag.

The URL tag requires the actual URL to be INSIDE the tag, and then the TEXT FOR THE LINK to be on the OUTSIDE! Like this:

{url=http://blah/}THIS IS TEXT FOR LINK DUUUUUHHHH!{/url}

Of course, braces means brackets, as if you didn't already know that. Next time I find a broken thread, I'm just going to delete the damn thing and forget the conversation ever existed!

as a political science student, your jargon means nothing to me. People just cut and paste their links into their post instead of putting it in a word or something?

Sine, the problem is with phpbb, not us. I know the URL rules, but I sometimes make mistakes. I know C and C++ backwards and forwards and I still get syntax errors all the time because I - you guessed it - make mistakes. If malformed URLs crash phpbb, then it's a bug, and the obvious solution is to upgrade the forum software.

Geez man, I'm the one who made the mistake and I knew damn well ahead of time this would cause it... hence when I posted and the thread wouldn't come back I knew instantly what I did. So it's not an issue of us not knowing what to do, it's an honest mistake. I'm sorry, but being a dickhole about the thing really isn't the best way to go about it.

Kupek's right-- it's a bug in the software; it's happened before and it'll happen again, so wouldn't upgrading it at least to a version that fixed this issue be worth the effort? It can't be more painful than having to dig into the database everytime this happens. We're been running on the same version of phpbb for how many years now? If the copyright at the bottom is any indication we're encroaching on 4 years now.

Yeah, and the latest release is version 3. If I'm going to totally redo the board, I'm not going to bother with phpBB again. That would already take up too much time and energy, and frankly, I wish one of these new MBs have that custom font/background feature.

(I just can't believe that you guys can't seem to figure out a simple URL tag.)

There's a URL button, I just use that....VERY infrequently. Thank God for hyperlinks :-)

This thread is a perfect example of you being an insufferable douchebag, Sine. Thanks

Sine, stop being difficult. We know how to use the URL tag, but we can still make mistakes.

Or just simply choose not to use it at all. What's the big deal with this URL tag? Who cars if a URL is 3 lines long?

Long URLs cause horizontal scroll bars, which I find obnoxious. But more importantly, when a link is placed inside a paragraph, it's much easier to read if it's integrated into a sentence.

This hasn't really affected me so I don't use the URL button.

First, when I post a long URL, it always becomes two or three lines long rather than one super-long line. So for me, that's not an issue. Second, I never place a link within a sentence, I always put them on their own. Hit the enter button a couple of times and plop in the link. It helps highlight it and since it's used for backup rather than to make the point, it don't need to be within the sentence.

I actually dislike it where there's 7000 links every paragraph. I'm no journalist, I'm just discussing stuff on a forum. Don aside, most people here rarely go above 4 or 5 sentences per post. Sine and I are some of the worst offenders but even we don't make it the norm. How many links you gonna have in 4 or 5 sentences? 2 or 3 absolute max, 99% of the time only 1? So there's really very little reason to use it IMO unless you're writing an article on a website or something. And even then, it's irritating when every point made has a link or two to it.

BTW, I have no idea why, but this made me laugh...a lot. Such a wonderful way to start a sentence among friends. :-)
