this is mostly at you seek. are there any real boxers left or has all the talent moved to MMA? if floyd jr. is the best of what we're looking at, we're hosed.
(i've been shadowboxing about an hour a day or so on average since i got banned here)

Heavyweight boxing is, boxing ppvs still have the highest numbers. It has been 5 years since there's been a major heavyweight champ (since Lewis).

hm.
i might start boxing in earnest...there are some gyms around here.
what's the best way to get a head start on preventing brain damage, assuming i actually want to try going and hitting other men in the head myself sometime in a ring setting?

Perhaps a more helpful comment: you don't hit full speed and power during sparring. Sometimes you will get rocked, but it's nothing like getting hit during an actual match. If you don't compete regularly, I doubt you'll get hit hard enough, often enough, to cause lasting damage.

Weave, slip, clench and guard your jaw, breath through your nose, stay on your toes.

And you will get hit many, many times before you can reliably do that while getting hit. The flinching instinct is strong, and takes time to overcome - I still haven't.

Everything changes when you're being hit and you're not used to it. It takes time to be able to react well under fire, even when you know what you're supposed to.
