The Shrine

I had my 20 week anatomy ultrasound today. This is the week we lost the first one, so I was really nervous! But, everything is perfect so far! Good fluid levels, perfect growth, and all the organs (and cord) look completely normal!

Congrats! Glad to hear everything is going well!

We purposely didn't find out the sex until they were born. Figure you should have the surprise at least once. It also builds up your white, green, and yellow clothing for the next babies :-)

Congrats again and it's awesome to hear everything is going well. My kids will be 6 months old on Saturday. The boy's already walking if you hold him up, they've got their own language thing going (boy doesn't shut the fuck up; they'll likely start talking soon), and they've just moved over to semi-solid foods (just last week; they're in Israel so I haven't seen it yet myself) on occasion.

You're gonna be experiencing all this stuff very, very soon. Excited Sine?

Somewhat. Still a lot to take in, and honestly, the whole thing probably won't sink in until I'm holding the kid in my hands.

Woohoo! Then the only thing you have to worry about is the fact that the baby carries half of Sine's genetics.

They don't believe me, but I will unnerd this kid. I'll be the one to make sure he's awesome enough to not get picked on in school.

Yeah...I have to say, I don't find Sine particularly nerdy. A freethinking Kentuckian who's pro-drug-legalization, anti-establishment but also anti-anarchy, follows Bill Hicks and other societal rebels...kind of hard to pigeonhole him into that, I think.

Six year olds don't understand or know the difference between "geeks" and "nerds". And six year olds don't care what the difference is, either.

In all honesty, I haven't "felt" that much different. I mean, the kids are everything to me and I will sacrifice everything for them, but really, my life hasn't changed too much. I'm a guy with more of an open door and have people over all the time. My family and friends knew that nothing would change as long as they were OK with the kids being around. And they love the kids and look forward to seeing them so it hasn't affected any of that. Really, my life has hardly changed other than some "chores" related to kids (ie. feeding them, changing them, etc.). But you look forward to spending the time with them and often, you can do just have them involved with you as you do many things anyways.

Sure the wife's "job" is, for the time being, to take care of the kids (it will remain that way permanently if we can make it work financially). But if you think of when the "job" ends (now that we're past them getting up too often at night) around supper time, there's hardly any "extra" work for her. I come home and we play with the kids, I take them downstairs with me to hang out (yep, to hang out, they love it; a couple of the guys I'm sure remember me having to pause for a sec during a Horde session while I had to change my son :-) to give the wife a break. She still reads, watches her shows, etc., that she did before. Not a huge change for her other than the fact that she doesn't have to go to work and the occasional getting up during the night (it's rare now, my kids sleep very well at night; we're incredibly fortunate that way).

There's a big fallacy about how much your life will change once you have kids. Sure, the first couple of months are very different, particularly if you're dealing with premature kids. But once you get past that, it's a relatively small change unless you make it a big one.

At least for the first year or two anyways :-)

Well considering these days all kids are a little geeky, playing video games, doing stuff on the computer, etc. How many young kids dont know how to use a computer or dont play the latest video games? Hardly any... The lines between geek and normal are fading. I used to be scared to tell people I dated someone I met online and them thinking I was psychotic...now it's common place. Geeks are the cool kids now. I'd be proud to have a geek! When is my "Geek Inside" shirt getting here dammit?

Are you sure? I think its the other way around. I think of geeks more positively than I do nerds. I picture nerds with the pocket protectors and taped glasses. Geeks wearing the gaming or star wars shirts and playing Guitar Hero on Expert lol

Well, maybe it's either a generational thing or just geographical. Around where I live, I've always heard 'nerd' used for the really smart guys who just like computers, anime, video games, etc., and were socially ostracized for that (often out of jealousy). I'm a nerd by definition but 'cause I played football, I was never ostracized. Of course, that's changed with the nerds taking over the world. They've become "cool" now because they have all the money. American Pie: Beta House actually refers to this as the main rival to the Beta House is the nerd house with all the money and all the hot chicks (BTW, those direct-to-DVD American Pie movies aren't nearly as bad as they appear to be; they're better than #2 but not quite as good as #1).

The term 'geek' was used more to refer to a social deviant who often looked out of place for one reason or another. They didn't necessarily like computers, etc., but they did often enough.

That was the main separation that I understood growing up. Geek was someone who was just was very awkward socially whereas a nerd is someone who was into "nerdy" things.

Nerd - ugly person who is highly intelligent and knowledgeable. Geek - ugly and often obsessed with the media; movies, music, and videogames. Usually both have poor social skills. A person can be nerdy and geeky.

To relate to Simpsons and South Park:

A nerd is someone like Martin Prince.

A geek is someone like Butters or Milhouse.

I declare you all to be geeks, nerds, dorks, and other kinds of assorted freaks by virtue of the fact that you all seem unnecessarily obsessed with drawing fine distinctions between these words.

The bottom line is..it's not neccessarily uncool to be a geek or nerd. Sure there are extremes...Star Wars kid, Tron suit guy, etc. But generally, us geeks/nerds are the cool kids now

And yeah I really did order a shirt with the intel logo that says "Geek Inside" hehe like this one:

I had my own made, Im chunky and the one on thinkgeek wouldn't fit, and I hate those kinda sleeves. And it came in today!! I LOVE it, especially because I made it, logo and all
