Not a joke. Discuss.

I really did think it was a joke, until I saw it everywhere.

He hasn't DONE anything yet, especially since he was only in office a few weeks by the time nominations closed. But then again other nobel prizes this year haven't made sense either... why does Finland or wherever have to be douchebags and stir up this crap?

Says he got it not for what he did but what he planned to do, I think.

Finland? It's common knowledge throughout the world to anyone who can read that the Nobel Prize is of Swedish origin.

I was discussing this with a conservative coworker of mine who does not like Obama and shares the sentiment that he hasn't done anything.

I think that this is just posturing by the Nobel Peace prize to accomplish two goals:

first is the create legitimacy in the POTUS after it was so heavily destroyed by Obama's predecessor. This would be a great start for this president to heavily differentiate himself and his policies from Bush Jr.

second is to spur on the POTUS to actually become involved in international peace initiatives. Since Obama has a lot of big issues within the country, it may stop him from diverting his attention to international issues of hostilities that are not directly pointed at the United States.

If that was their intention, then I say "good move guys who dun decide to whom the Nobel Peace Prize goes".

I saw this article that says Obama won it because he is not George Bush.

Regarless of what you think of Obama, it's too early for him and very much cheapens the meaning of the prize. I can see why Carter got so pissed, he actually earned his.

Here's the other kicker: the votes went in on Feb 1. How long was he in office then?

He could not have been in office for more than two weeks even if they nominated him at the last possible moment.

Like I said, it's like he won this for not being Bush.

I'ma let you finish, but Jimmy Carter's peacemaking was the greatest of alltime.

I really haven't heard of anyone else deserving of it so far, though, eh?

At the very least - Biden ain't going to be shooting anyone in the face.

The awards been a joke since Gore won it.

Gore actually earned it at least. He went around the world holding seminars and talking with world leaders for more than a year.

A lot of good that did anything. Especially considering an hour of private jet fuel equates to about a year of driving. I think a requisite for the prize should be some sort of lasting effect.

Obama likely won because of what Don said, he's not Bush. He has commited himself to ending the current major wars of the world, incidently started by Bush. It was inevitable for any successor of the Bush regime to win it after all the trouble that they caused the world. It is hard to see the possibility of an even worse government succeed Bush's in the US.

Right now there isn't anyone else in the world who can possibly do more for peace.

To me, that's the stupid thing about all of this. You shouldn't get one of the biggest awards around because, perhaps you might possibly succeed in promoting peace. Once he does it, fine, give him the award. It's just so premature.

I love how the conservative think tank response is all you ever hear.... (not a comment on you, Flip, but rather how it's the only thing you ever hear from anyone who ever wants to slam Gore. They're very good at creating doubt and making people believe it)

Even if his global footprint was against his philosophies, he still got people talking about it and promoted it across the world. He sure as hell didn't invent the topic but he pushed it to the front page again globally for a while. We'll see how long-lasting it really is - how much change it actually creates - but that doesn't mean he didn't earn it. And he earned it a helluva lot more than Obama did (just nearly as much as Carter).

Ok, Zeus, read what you wrote.

Now think about this:

Ghandi won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Ghandi liberated one of the largest countries on the planet from the strongest empire in all the world's history.

He did it without firing a single shot.

What.
The.
Fuck.
Has.
Obama.
DONE!?

Actually, Gandhi didn't win it. He was nominated for it many times though.

The question of Obama though, it should be asked who has done more over the past year? I don't know the full story, so I don't know the answer to that.

One year, Schiller's List won an Oscar.

Another year, Titatic won an Oscar.

By sending 40,000 more troops?

I actually somewhat agree with this.

Yeah, I thought they were the best of the nominated films that year too.
