Fighters of the year

1. Gegard Mousasi - With a K-1 victory over Musashi, and coming off of huge wins over Melvin Manhoef and Jacare a year ago, The 24 year old USSR born fighter pushed his record to 28-2 with wins over Mark Hunt, Sokoudjou, Babalu, and most recently over Gary Goodridge (who was his Dynamite!! replacement opponent for Tim Sylvia). He is my choice for #1. He already has multiple MMA championships.

2. Alistair Overeem - or Ubereem as Shiavelo likes to call him making a play on the German "Over" in his name. was an MMA fighter who made a huge splash in K-1 with a crushing victory over Badr Hari at the start of the year (Badr Hari being the #2 kickboxer in the world two years in a row), but also a victory over K-1 legend Peter Aerts, and making his way to third in the K-1 GP when he was stopped by Badr Hari in a much anticipated rematch. Overeem also went 3-0 in MMA, including a stunning KO over Fujita, his replacement opponent for Arlovski at Dynamite!! a couple of days ago.

3. Semmy Schilt - This guy not only won the K-1 GP for the fourth time tying the current record set by Ernesto Hoost; but he also defeated Peter Aerts's record by completing the final 8 tournament in under 6 minutes defeating along the way: Jerome LeBanner, Remy Bonjaski in the Semis, and Badr Hari in the finals. Also with a victory over Daniel Ghita in the final 16.

4. Badr Hari - The Golden Boy, after coming off of a loss against Overeem, Hari went on to be 5-1 in K-1 for the rest off 2009, including a KO victory over Semmy Schilt early in the year, and another avenged loss over Alistair Overeem in the tournament.

5. Brett Rogers - despite only going 2-1 this year in MMA, he made his presence known as a top guy when he went for over 6 minutes against Emelianenko Fedor, who is the most devastating fighter to ever grace the sport of MMA; and handed him his only MMA career defeat. Brett Rogers who came out of nowhere first drew a lot of attention when he showed extreme disrespect towards Kimbo Slice, saying that Slice is overhyped and wouldn't last a minute against him. The 9-0 fighter then added a 10th victory via KO against Andrei Arlovski 6 months ago. He proved more in his loss against Fedor than most others in the sport have proven this year.

Fighter of the decade:

1. Fedor - He has gone 10 years without a loss, a decade of utter destruction. In that 10 years he cleaned out an entire generation of heavyweight greats. Then after continues to destroy all challengers. He is a world class Judo fighter, a world class Sambo fighter winning many gold medals. He has fought before the Russian President. He has fought before tens of millions of people. He was most recently watched by 26 million people live across the world in his Strikeforce victory over Brett Rogers. He was watched by tens of millions more as the PRIDE heavyweight champion. He has defeated Olympic class fighters, world class kickboxing champions, many victories over MMA champions and former champions. He has yet to be defeated. Ten years and 31 victories, puts him on the level of greats like Joe Lewis, Jack Dempsy, Alexander Karelin, and Mike Tyson. No matter what happens in the future, this decade was very solidly Fedor's. The only smudge on his career is a controversial defeat 10 years ago that should have been a No Contest. His MMA record consists of 31 wins, and an additional 8 amateur wins for a total of 39 victories, he holds 12 gold medals in national and world class Sambo and Judo. He is without argument, the greatest mixed martial artist in the history of the sport, and it will be likely be decades until someone can match his career to date.
