History textbooks are notoriously bad. These days I get my history from actual books by authors I trust.

American historians are terrible in general. To the American historian, history is seen as a series of events that 'progress' towards the social order that they support. They add and subtract to the significance of events and change the actual meaning of events to fit their direction; drawing a progression of links between various events when no links exist.

However, a lot of the history teachers I had were the type that knew the history books were crap and just gave us the real facts.
