A|listair Overeem is the scariest human in the world

This is from the first of two events which will determine the best striker in combat sports today. The second event (K-1 World GP finals) happens in December where the quarter finals, semi-finals, and finals will all take place. It is, in my opinion, the greatest combat sports event in existence - watching this event has ceremony and spectacle that surpasses even the Olympic games. The event itself is usually about 8 hours in length, this is the longest period of time I watch TV in any given year for most years of the last 10 years (Star Wars and Lord of the Rings marathon viewing surpassed it in certain years =P).
The format is as follows:
The tournament is 16 fighters, the first 8 fights occurred yesterday morning.
The fighters are chosen as follows:
* 8 fighters are chosen from the final 8 in last years tournament
* 6 fighters are chosen from sub-tournaments hosted around the world.
* 2 additional fighters are chosen by the K-1 committee
The Final 16 event takes place in South Korea, but the Finals take place in Tokyo
Alistair Overeem came in third place in the World GP finals. His opponent, Ben Edwards, won the Oceana tournament by KO in all of his fights winning this sub-tournmanet faster than anyone else has done in history. He was placed against Alistair Overeem in the Final 16 event.
Anyway, the fight:
By the way Edwards fought (seemed kind of like a desperate flurry), I would say he was scared - especially after Overeem's first punch; when he realized his punches weren't really do much to Overeem, Edwards was terrified. When Overeem leveled him with his second punch, the fight was done - he was just standing to maintain ego after that, and will probably have a little more dizzy over the next few weeks for his effort - as he got leveled twice more ending the fight in the first round.
Results for the event are:
Badr Hari is out on suspension (committed too many illegal acts, last one was kicking a guy's head like a soccer-ball while he was on the ground).
Peter Aerts defeats Ewerton Teixiera by decision - Aerts is one of the oldtime K-1 guys, this guy was winning K-1 WGPs when Alistair Overeem was still just a teenaged aspiring MMA Middleweight.
Kyotaro defeats Jerome LeBanner by DQ (arguing with the ref) - LeBanner is another old favourite, but he should have hung up the gloves 2 years ago. He is ruining his legacy.
Semmy Schilt defeats Hesdy Gerges
Daniel Ghita KO's Errol Zimmerman - Ghita is a beast, last year I felt terrible for an old favourite MMA fighter of mine "Sergei Kharitonov" who got absolutely destroyed by him; Kharitonov fought until he received enough leg kicks that his legs were all shades of purple, pink, and red between white and black. If you're not familiar, back in the day Kharitonov was the younger and bigger fighter of the two Russians everyone was talking about - it was a question of who would be the better man for a while - the other Russian was Fedor Emelianenko.
Tyrone Spong defeats Ray Sefo - Sefo another old favourite, and one of the most entertaining guys in the industry - he has sat alongside the Voice (Michael Schiavello) for commentary on certain K-1 events
Gokhan Saki defeats Freddy Kemayo
Mighty Mo (Replacement for Andrei Arlovski) defeats Raul Catinas - I haven't heard of the other Raul guy, but in this fight Mighty Mo was a bit of a surprise addition, at it was Andrei Arlovski who was supposed to enter the tournament - he had cold feet at the last moment and pulled out. Arlovski would have been facing the easiest guy there. As good of a striker Arlovski is in MMA, I doubt he would see nearly that success in K-1. First of all, K-1 fighters are generally superior athletes to MMA fighters; second, Arlovski is a tall MMA fighter standing at 6 foot 4 - he is a short K-1 fighter where the average fighter stands at 6 foot 6, and the champion Semmy Schilt is nearly 7 feet tall. Granted, Mighty Mo IS the second shortest guy in the tournament by far, but still relatively successful =)
