It has been sleeting here for 24 hours. Snow is up next. Company put me up in a hotel near work to make sure people could get in. Got bombed last night.

wow, they paid for a hotel as opposed to taking a few days off? That sucks, i would much rather be snowed in with my stuff around me. Sounds like it will be brutal in your area and all you get to watch is hotel cable.

The snow storms have been narrowly missing us (well now that Kupek has moved I guess just me) here in SW Virginia but it's still been comparatively cold here as compared to other East coast locations. Forecasts mark us down for getting hit by snow/ice/sleet on Saturday so maybe I'll eat my words. That said I like the snow provided sidewalks are kept clear for pedestrians (yeah like that'll happen).

It has snowed every third day since I moved up here.

Yeah flip, since I work for a 24/7 data center they were worried if something happened and an engineer couldn't drive in to take care of it so they put me and a couple others up in a hotel a block away. Best part is, I get to expense EVERYTHING, including booze.

God finally decided to let half of the rest of America finally know what Buffalo feels like, huh? :-)
The only question is: why the hell did Canada have to get caught in this lesson? We get hit enough as it is, we don't need a lesson
EDIT: it's been nearly 18 years since our last blizzard warning......WHY MUST WE BE COLLATERAL DAMAGE? :-)

35 cms in one day last week, we're expecting another 40 between now and the end of the week. That's about two and a half feet of snow. Although schools were closed last week, nothing else was =P
Sometimes I resent the fact that our snow clearing force is one of the most powerful in the known universe =P

We were expected to get 9" - 16" of snow in STL City, we got 3" of sleet. Everything will be ice tomorrow as it is supposed to get down to -2 here over night. A few people came into the office today. I'm staying at the hotel again tonight since I can't get back home yet because of the hill I live on is completely iced over and my car is too light to get up it. Tomorrow I'll probably park at the bottom of the hill until it warms up and walk to my house.

Of course, I get told to take my computer home and to work from home 'cause of the incoming blizzard, one of those "every few years" type things. I take the bus to and from work so it's a bit of a chore. Then my area (just west of Toronto) is the ONLY area in all of Southern Ontario that doesn't get slammed. So rather than just chillin' at home doin' my work at my leisure in my pajamas, I have to drag my ass to work FAST after waking up a little late assuming there was no chance I'd be able to go in.
Yep, God hates me.

Well, this morning there is indeed at least another 20 cms of snow on the ground. Yesterday I walked through a field. The snow was fairly hard and easy to step on as a result. I looked over in a frozen pond at the edge of an inlet, and decided to snap a picture at some ducks (about two dozen of them) that were sitting on the ice and in water; somehow a little portion of it managed to stay unfrozen even in the -10 weather. I stood a little too long and one of my feet slipped through the ice covering the field, and in a second I was up to my waist in snow. It is fairly deep here, and I scared the shit out of the ducks...
It is just fairly peculiar that migratory birds are beginning to winter so far North now. The geese didn't take off until about two weeks ago; they're usually gone by late November. It is either a sign of global warming or collective avian retardation.

~30 cm a storm this weekend, another 15 tomorrow. Temperatures have been very warm this winter with only 5-6 days so far that have dipped to the -15 to -25 range. Right now we're around 0-3 degrees. Everything is wet right now due to the melting snow. In the deeper locations, the snow is now packing, so I am no longer sinking 2-4 feet into loose snow.
All in all, not the worst winter for snow, and warmer than last year. From what I gather from other Easterners; geese are mostly wintering in New England, although there are a lot of migratory birds here that did not fly south. The water in the harbour is not totally frozen on the surface, the ducks are all gathered beneath the rocks along the shoreline; I mean, it's still cold and they are crazy for staying here.
* Note, non-migratory birds have little problem with cold weather, but I was almost certain that seabirds like ducks and geese couldn't survive sub-zero temperatures until this winter.
