An almost unheard of 8.9 earthquake hits Japan and triggers a tsunami that is making its way throughout the coastal countries in Asia and Hawaii.
Don, you alright? I know Singapore is a ways from Japan, but it's also pretty damn close to the ocean and only about 3000 miles from Japan.

The video footage is breathtaking. 170ft+ vessels just tossed around like nothing. Buildings on fire as they are carried by the waves inland. The Sendai airport runway overtaken by water.

It's insane. Tsunami's are, to me, some of the scariest natural events on earth. We know someone living in Japan, but thankfully she was ok.

300 bodies have been recovered in the city of Sendai. It is kind of a good thing this happened during the day instead of the night when people were sleeping. I'm sure the death toll would have been easily 5x worse.

Holy shit, now they are saying 10,000 people. Wow. And that reactor is in pretty bad shape.

It is all very bad. But the Japanese are doing their best. I have a friend in Tokyo and she's been giving reports on the situation...they are struggling, but they have a lot of help from us, and I think they will get through.
The reactor situation is the worst. I can't believe there have been that many explosions. Nuclear power ain't the safest in a disaster.

Tsunamis are no joke indeed.

So now one of the reactors is in partial meltdown, another could go full meltdown. Wow.

All very bad.
On the plus side, even through all this turmoil, there has been NO looting whatsoever that's been reported. So the Japanese win points for awesomeness that way.
Can you imagine if this had happened here? Looters would be pulling heists like they were going out of style.

I believe that is part of the cultural divide between our society and theirs. Not only that, but there are so many aftershocks (60 in 24 hours yesterday) and the threat of a nuclear disaster that many value their lives over their worldly possessions.
