Not even related to my post about switching away from Verizon, they implemented their new pricing plans today:

Currently, i pay $60 for 450 minutes (of which i hardly use 200) and then i pay an additional $30 for the smartphone plan of data/e-mail/messagin/etc for a base of $90.

This new plan would require me to buy the 2GB bucket of data for $60, then tack on one smartphone for +$40 for a base of $100. Jesus!

I can see this working with a family that has 4 or 5 devices, but this is really screwing the single guy. I refuse to call my mom and dad and get them to join me on a bucket plan, nor will i ever risk signing up with a few friends to split a plan because i'll still get screwed when they dont pay on time. What is solo person to do to save? Nothing.

I think they're heading in the opposite direction of what most customers want. Who needs unlimited minutes nowadays? I rarely talk on my phone now. I want a lot of data. That's it.

Up here, 500MB of data will cost me $25 a month (1GB for $30). A great calling plan (gov't one) with unlimited weekends/evenings after 6pm, 2500 sent texts (I'm not a teenage girls, that's unlimited to me), unlimited receiving texts, 250 incoming and 250 outgoing minutes, voice mail, call waiting, call display costs $22.34. It's insane how much we get goosed for data.

Well, the world is catching up and realizeing they cant allow people unlimited data like the old days. From the chart i linked, Verizon is charging $50 for 1GB now.

Yeah, I don't think unlimited data is something we could/should expect anymore, but the prices per GB are a rip-off and way too high. We really need to find a nice happy middle.

I realize they don't want to sell unlimited bandwidth but is bandwidth really that costly? I mean if bandwidth is that expensive how does Youtube not go bankrupt?

Back in 2009 you didn't have a phone that was like a mini-laptop

I think what the companies are trying to do is re-establish the prices before LTE and the next-gen after that is in effect. Because once that happens, the currently usage is going to pale in comparison

Back in 2009 was when I actually had my smartphone, granted it wasn't as sophisticated as what's out now but I could surf the Internet.. which is what most people do, right? Other than purchasing the odd app, what are people even doing needing multiple gigabytes on a data plan? I'm guessing most app store purchases wouldn't even count towards your bandwidth... God, they do, don't they?

Tethering is a big thing nowadays, particularly to your tablet. And with the new line of Samsungs, you can do real surfing well instead of the BS mobile sites. Lots of torrent programs on there too. And as video because more and more feasible/accessible, the usage goes up significantly
