He passed away due to renal failure. He's one of those guys that lived a surprisingly long time and was always in surprisingly good shape for his age, right to around the end; especially considering he already looked like he was in in his 60's or 70's by the 1950's (he played Kirk Douglass's father in 1958), and has always been overweight.

Sad to see him go, he will always remain one of the most entertaining actors of his time.

Bummer. One of my favorite actors of that period. Always played the soldier comic relief.

The Vikings, Borgnine played Ragnar, King of the Vikings.... The slave (you may recognize), who gives him the sword, is played by Tony Curtis - father of Jamie Lee Curtis (and her mother Janet Lee is also in the film, along with Kirk Douglas).

Probably my favourite 1950's flick - or at least the one I've watched the most.
