In retrospect, who knew that my two-year-old RADEON doesn't support cube mapping or pixel shaders?  I just bought a 3D game programming book for $50...anyone know the cheapest card I can get that will reasonably support pixel shaders?

That should have read "Who knew that my ancient graphics card wouldn't support cutting-edge technology?"
