Neat quote and comic.

Though, on the flip side, I love how it's always the guy who ends up being the lucky 1% that truly "makes it" in life that spouts off quotes like "Yes, you too can become anything you want to if you put your mind to it".

Let me ask you a question: how many astronauts woulda gotten there without that mentality?

Tell that to my dad, a former drummer. Sure, he has his own business now, but it's got nothing to do with music.

Answer my question. The failure of 99.999% doesn't preclude the requirement of a certain mentality

I'm just saying that the 0.00001% have a confirmation bias that makes their worldview rose-tinted.

It doesn't really factor in the tremendous amount of luck involved in getting to these positions that you dream of when you're a kid. So much stuff can get in the way and then your hope zeroes out. It's a great thing to teach kids, but once they're in high school it's probably just as important to start setting reachable goals. I'm sure being a scholar, scientist, and being remarkable athletic doesn't hurt either. And how often does someone get the master stroke of genes that are involved in becoming a potential astronaut? Let's not forget the military service that's helpful in selection. Or the politics involved.

But it's a nice sentiment.

Confirmation bias? No, it's a requirement to even be considered the lucky 0.001% to get there. The sheer volume of dedication, excessively hard work, and perserverence (for many different reasons, including those Shrin pointed out) required to get there cannot be undermined just because such a select few ever make it a reality. You still need to try and trying requires everything Hatfield talked about

Nurture your kids dreams, don't destroy them. Sure, it involves a TON of reality checking along the way and the requisite adjustments that result from those. But that don't mean your kid shouldn't try
