And I think this is the first time Henry Abbott wrote anything positive about Kobe Bryant consider this is a guy that generates page views by saying Kobe Bryant sucks.
I remember seeing a special on Bruce Bowen about how this was a relatively unathletic guy who couldn't quite cut it for NBA, and then one year he decided he need to reinvent himself as a defense expert because there sure isn't anyone interested in his offensive talents which means tripping people and whatnot. And people always talk about basketball is tough but honetsly if you punch someone that's an automatic ejection but yet the chance of a season ending injury from a punch is considerably lower than trippling the shooter as he comes down since all kinds of stuff can tear/spring there that mess you up for a long time. I think Shane Battier still does his Hong Kong manga move where he tries to poke out the eye of the shooter in order to distract them because you know, if you see someone trying to poke your eyes out you'd probably get distracted, even though he doesn't actually poke anyone's eye out. Recently Ibaka punched Blake Griffin in the groin and didn't even get a suspension for that, and I'm not sure what kind of 'physical' has to do with punch someone in the groin.
Honestly from what I can tell being a 'defense expert' just means you play more dirty than the normal guys. Okay if you're LeBron who is just way faster/stronger than anyone sure you can defend anyone really well, but random guys who aren't atheletic (by NBA standards) don't suddenly become defense specialists just by focusing their limited offensive powers into defense. In general it's not a surprise that the rules not to mention the physics of basketball greatly favor the offense. NBA prefers to see people score than not scoring and to reliably stop someone scoring without you being LeBron James pretty much requires you to cheat.
