"The world has become an idolater of this god called money," - Pope Francis

He took all of the gold out of the equation, and instead all the golden accessories of the Pope, wears only a cross made of iron; and the throne of gold has been replaced with a white chair. Two days ago he suspended Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst of Limburg for excessive spending, including 43 million dollar renovations on his house. While the traditional Catholic response would be that this is for God's Glory - Pope Francis has a different idea, that these sorts have fallen under the sway of the money-idol. He also cooks his own meals, travels by bus, and lives in an apartment building built for guests of the Vatican - rather than taking the typical entitlements of the office of the Pope.

"If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?" - Pope Francis
"When a Christian becomes a disciple of the ideology, he has lost the faith: he is no longer a disciple of Jesus." - Pope Francis
"It is a serious illness, this of ideological Christians. It is an illness, but it is not new." - Pope Francis

It's interesting to see a Pope who actually agrees with the Gospel. One thing that the Gospel rails against is the idolatry of ideology. The prime example of this is when the Pharisees attacked Jesus and his followers for not eating correctly or obeying the Sabbath, and Jesus's response in short equates to: The law was made for the benefit of the people, people weren't created for the benefit of the law. On top of other social changes, he wants women to have greater roles in the Church, and it has been argued that women could be elected to the College of Cardinalshttp://www.washingtonpost.com/national/ ... story.html.

He is a supporter of religious pluralism, and is attempting to bridge the rifts that have been created over the past few hundred years.

There are 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in the world, it is interesting to see that their current spiritual leader is better than the large majority of the other 265 Popes through history; probably better than just about all of them. Could it have something to do with coming from the Americas? Could this be a turning point for Christian religions?

Do you like this guy?
Because I like this guy.

He's cool. I like that he brings a level of rational morality to a place that's been classically devoid of a lot of that. Hopefully he lives a long time since his actions seem quite positive. I do agree that it could have something to do with being foreign to Europe and the Vatican since being so far isolated from them has clearly fostered a level of independent thinking that was absent in even the Popes that were considered good recently.

It's too bad so much of the wealth is probably hoarded. Is that gold chair just sitting in some ridiculously lavish storage room?

I'm not saying one of the most populated religions in the world shouldn't have a notable seat of power (woo double meaning), but if a religious figure is able to get a forty-three million dollar renovation then something has gone wrong.

Aye. I'm not much for religion in general, but he seems to be one of the 0.00001% of Christians that actually -gets- Christ's teachings. And Catholicism is the most corrupt and hypocritical of all, so he's got a big job ahead of him. (Seriously, how many religions have their own COUNTRY?!)

The Vatican has some history behind it and actually moved countries to war for centuries so I can understand why it is what it is. I mean you wouldn't give that up just because the times have changed.

I find the Mormon headquarters that's basically a castle to be much more disturbing.
