I usually don't binge the news this way but this entire thing has me wide-eyed and riveted.

I saw this theory that he probably just walked out the front door and they spent all this time digging up a tunnel so that it wouldn't be so obvious how he got out, because it sounds like it's a lot more complicated than it has to be to dig a tunnel for so long and not getting caught compared to other ways of escaping.

I doubt it matters other than that it's pretty clear that he had help and that prison officials knew about it. You don't build a giant tunnel excavating several thousand tons of dirt and have lighting and air conditioning installed anyplace without pretty serious signs that shit is going down underground. It's almost as if the tunnel's lavish nature was designed to send a message to Enrique Pena Nieto and the rest of the Mexican government about who really rules Mexico.
