Gimme a break, its normal for a law firm to collect around 15-20% of the settlement.

<div style='font: 12pt "Cooper Black"; text-align: left; '>The issue here is that there is one law firm representing a TON of people. So yeah, each individual gets only a few thousand while the law firm gets millions, but the people as a whole are getting more than the law firm:
Law settlement: 4 billion
People's portion (80% assuming 40,000 people): 80,000 per person of the 3,200,000,000 pot
Law firm portion (20% assuming 1 law firm): 800,000,000
Of course it will seem lopsided, but thats the way it is done. The only other way would be to have a higher settlement number, but do we really want a ton of businesses to go out of business every day?
The authors claim that its the tax payers that have to pay for these settlements is absurd, as well. He/she says the raise in law suits have forced companies to raise their prices... well duh! If from one year to the next your loss from law suits has tripled you have to offset it somehow! Again, if they dont raise prices, they will go out of business, and its not good for an economy where much is dependant on the stock market for businesses to go under every day.
If you want to losses from law suits and inadvertently lower prices then tell people to stop bringing up STUPID cases against big business. The cases that get to court and/or get settlements should only be those where people were badly injured or some other situation where it is just as bad. Sueing a company because you spilled coffee on yourself that doesnt say caution hot is retarded! As is bringing a suit against tobacco for second hand smoke damage. Smoking is still legal so the non-smoker obviously did it to themselves by:
A)Working in a place where you can smoke indoors (legal)
B)Going to a restaurant that has a smoking section a LOT (legal) or
C)Married a smoker (legal)
So whats the bif freaking deal! People are idiots.</div>

<div style='font: 12pt "Cooper Black"; text-align: left; '>Also, your subject header is wrong. It isnt the tobacco industries who are hiring these guys, the article clearly mentions they are the lawyers of plaintiffs and making money off of settlements. It looks like it's the states hiring the law firm for its people who filed a suit.</div>
