Squirrel? I think not, my friend - that there's a tanuki (or tanooki if you're reading the Super Mario 3 manual).

Studio Ghibli made an anime about tanuki called <i>Pom Poko</i>, which I saw a couple years ago...it was pretty good and very funny (except that the giant balls *were* a little disturbing).
