Recently at my mother's house I have the good package of DSL from SBC (150KB down 28KB up) but recently while playing CS:S I've noticed that my ping will jump well into the 400's at the beginning of a new map and I'm experiencing a lot of choke (Sephy if you know what Choke is can you explain it to me? I think it's just terminology for packets bottlenecking but maybe I'm wrong). Now the Modem is always on since we've got it hooked up to a Linksys router. No other computers are usually on when I'm playing except for mine, so I was curious if the ping spikes are also signs of a dying modem, either that or is SBC just shit?

Secondly, I hate my network admin at my apartment. I don't know what the fuck they are doing here but they have one T1 split between 220 users. My pings in CS three weeks ago used to hover in the mid 40's to 50's now they spike continuously. Again this is another problem where I get a lot of Choke (like a 5 cent whore on my monster cock.) So anyway, I'm just bitching at their inadequecy to give me my internet when I could have paid for SBC DSL for the same amount I'm paying for this shared T1 where I can get busted for downloading movies and music, I hate corporately owned apartment complexes.

There I'm done.

DSL and T1s both suck. Why the fuck would somebody pay more money for less shit? Normal cable service here is 4Mbps/384Kbps, which beats the 1.54Mbps on a T1, and the 1.2Mbps/224Kbps on your DSL. Then again, I know some areas of the world don't have cable modem services, and that makes me sad.

Oh, and it sounds like something is using up the bandwidth on your mom's DSL. Remove Kazaa and get that spyware shit outta there. Also, secure your wireless router. You know that guy with the most kills on your CS games? Yeah, that's your neighbor stealing your bandwidth and fragging you with it. Do some speed tests (ping times don't mean shit), and be sure to turn off all of the other PCs connected to that router. Then try some with the PCs turned back on. If you see a difference, kill all of the P2P and spyware bullshit off of the other computers. If you have any Windows 98/ME machines, they need their RWINs tweaked for broadband.

After you're done with this, come back to me and say "Wow, you were right about all of that! How did you know?". I'll probably say "Because I'm fucking psychic!"

Yes it makes me sad too that I'll have big brother monitoring my download activity and they'll have the ability to sopeana the info from my ISP, and SBC is cheaper than rising cable rates and sharing the bandwidth with my entire neighborhood.

It's only for like a split second though and it comes and goes. And it's a wired router, not wireless. I don't run anything frivolous in the background while playing CS:S at all except for AIM. I scan my PC weekly for viruses and spyware, malware, ad-ware, and all that other crazy horseshit and I can name all 38 processes that I run on my PC. Mom's PC is usually off the network when I'm playing since I play in the evening. Speed tests come back normal for close to T1 speeds on my DSL download. Mom's PC is secured like mine, locked and stocked, but Norton is broken on it and I have to reinstall it again when I get home.

Yet I still have a problem even with your psychic abilities.

Could be lag on the other side, the server, maybe. Keep in mind that when everybody jumps onto a new map, the server is peaked at that point. Crazy shit is happening with everybody's network, such as map downloads, re-positioning everyone, etc. Are you using the same server all the time?

Could just be SBC's network, too. Call up tech support, but be nice about it. TSRs don't like to hear people whining about their online gaming and ping times, especially when your browsing and speeds are fine.

It occurs on the same server and other servers, regardless of how many other players are connected. The servers I play on normally do not run custom maps so I doubt downloading the maps is the issue.

I was thinking that it could be SBC's network. I have the same DSL and modem at my Dad's place so what I'll probably do is try to connect to the same server using his connection and monitor my connection to see if the same thing happens.
