"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are [a] few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

- President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 11/8/54
Seems as though they've multiplied since then. Sad how low the Republicans have sunk since Ike.

Heh, also found on the Texas Democrats web site.

It's just that the Republicans have mastered a PR blitz so well that they can pretty much do whatever the fuck they want, and not have to worry about the public at all. Now, more than ever, the populous act like sheep. Even when the public cries foul, the media just doesn't give a shit, and it's hard to get the public to shout loud enough to get the media to bother to report it.

Back in the day, the checks and balances were such that the government had something to fear from the public and the media. Now, they realize that if they ignore them, they will go away. Or on the chance that it might be something which would drag the ignorant masses from their Michael Jackson Runaway Bride trial, the government's PR blitz shows them something else to stare at, like some fucking magic trick.

Here, look at the sparkling wand. Pretty, wow! Pay no attention to the big wads of money that I'm stuffing in my pockets.
