$479 for 6 months??? Just because I'm male and live in the city doesn't mean I should be sterotyped as a shitty driver. I haven't had an accident since I've been driving! God I can't wait till I hit 25!

Dude, I pay like $1200 per 6 months and I AM 25. I've had one at-fault accident which didn't change my payment amount. Be glad you don't live in Cali, at least as far as insurance goes.

In Alberta, I have a friend who was trying to register a 2004 Cavallier. He has had 3 accidents, and the annual insurance would have been $11,000. He's 23 years old.
He got lucky and the company he's with is letting him use a company vehicle.

My annual income, as a graduate student, is $16,000. And I know that people in Biology and some liberal arts graduate programs make around $11,000.

What are you complaining about now??? I've payed roughly $600-$1000 a year ever since I started driving. The only reason mine is only $1500/year now is because of a fluke.

That's pretty fucking cheap dude...about the same as I'm paying now and I'm 30 with a spotless record. One guy I work with who has a pretty fucked up record is paying almost $200 a month...insurance ain't cheap...if you're under 25 and only paying that, you're lucky...

I have yet to understand why insurance companies haven't be brought down in discrimination suits. Imagine this sort of behaviour in our justice system:
Oh, you're black? Well, your race has been known to promote more crime, so I'm going to increase your sentence.
Oh, you're a male? Well, males are more likely to rape people, so I'm going to increase your sentence.
Oh, you're a young adult? Well, people under 25 are more like to commit a crime, so I'm going to increase your sentence.
Oh, you're a black male under 25? Well, shit, I'm just going to have to give you a life sentence for this parking ticket.

That's kind of an interesting point, actually...

The one bit of convoluted logic that always bugged me about car insurance was, "Hey, you haven't had an accident ever, which means percentage wise you're about due for one, so we're going to raise your rates". This happened to me a few years ago...
That's why I make sure every car I buy has all the extra safety features. The extra amount you pay is nothing compared to what anti-lock brakes, side-curtain airbags and the like will take off your insurance...

Your rates got raised because you never had an accident? That's seriously faulty logic. Accidents are not inevitable, so being "due" for one is a broken concept.

That's what I said...all they see is statistics...the average driver has about 2 accidents in the time they are licensed...I tried explaining that the reason it's only 2 is because people like me NEVER have one and we make up for the idiots that have them all the time...just sucks...and its pretty much the same for all insurance companies...they just look at statistics, not the individuals...ignore the fact I've never had an accident, never even had a ticket, always take defensive driving courses...nope, I'm just a statistic and statistically, I'm due...I considered leaving but the other insurance companies I got estimates from were no better...

I love how the "Safe Auto" commericials advertise that they has minimum coverage to "stay legal for less". As if minimum coverage is so hard to come by. I was on Progressive for a while, but I've switched to State Auto, now that I bought a house.

This is just for Liability though, maybe most of your insurance is also for just liability, but I'm not paying full coverage on my car. The only reason why it's so high is that there is also a 10% accident charge from when my brother had an accident back in 2002 in it. The insurance company, like many people I meet with my brother, can't tell the difference between the two of us. This isn't cheap insurance, when I was in Cape, it was $300 every six, now it jumps $200 120 miles from Cape, WTF? \
I do like Sine's point. And since I only get paid $7.50 an hour that means if I worked 40 hours a week, that'd be half of my paycheck going towards my insurance. They adjusted it correctly now that I already paid $150 towards it in May, so I only owe $339, so now I have to come up with that amount by June 16th, and my rent is due on the 1st.
