Odd. I can pretty easily say something tastes bitter, sweet, salty or sour, but i'll be damned if you ever hear me say, "Gee, this tastes umamiey."

The thread title seems to imply that schools are doing a poor job based on teaching information we now know to be somewhat incomplete.

Yes, yes, i didnt miss that in the article.

When i think of savory i think mouth watering... anything can do that, i dont think of savory as a type of taste. Is steak umamiey, i suppose...

And how long does it usually take for a schoolbook to get updated with new information? I doubt this is even in today's schoolbooks.

It's more of the location-based taste system, which quite frankly, I never believed in the first place.
