So Sine and I were having a good weekend...we bought a new King size mattress set. A nice one from an actual mattress store. And I got a new mp3 playing stereo and Sirius service for my new car.

Our side by side fridge was acting up and the fridge side was freezing everything, so we called a repair guy. The problem was a stuck vent that fixed itself when the guy tok the cover off the casing, so no charge there.

However, when he walked in the house he said..I smell gas. We brushed it off at first, we never smelled anything. However I had noticed in the past months a yucky smell in the basement..which I thought was mildew or something from a leak we get in the wall when it rains too much. it was in the general area.

Well, we call the Gas and Elec company and they come out immediately. Their natural gas meter thing starts goin off as soon as they walk in the door. They pinpoint the leak to the flex line pipe that connects our basement stove (we have 2 "kitchens") Apparenly the pipe was old and it cracked. Well, they turn off the gas, and then connect an air pump and pressure gauge to our pipe outside, pump air in and wait to see if the pressure drops, indicating another leak.

It dropped. Which meant there was another leak somewhere. They check everything outside with soapy water to see if any bubbles formed when they pumped more air pressure in the pipes. Nothing outside, so theyre done.l Everything inside the home is our problem.

They will not turn our gas back on until there is no more signs of a leak.

So we call a plumber. The plumber comes out and charges us 500 bucks to fix 6 leaks in the pipe seams and joints in our EXPOSED pipes. We have a finished basement and over half our pipes are in the walls. Gas co comes back and checks. Still a leak somewhere. So it has to be in the walls. Bad news.

Plumber quoted around 900-1200 additional charge for the work in the walls. We cant afford that!

So...our gas is off for now until we can get the leak fixed. We plan on trying to fix it ourselves, but we'll see how that goes.

Homeowners ins. doesnt cover it. Its out of our own pocket.

Stupid house. Its been cold showers this week and it really sucks. Thank goodness it isnt winter time!!

Ho boy. That's bad. Gas leaks are not good at all...thank goodness neither of you smoke (I'm guessing anyway).

Do you own your house or are you renting?

Im suprised nothing has happened as well. We dont smoke, but the water heater is in the same room in a closet. Im not as concerned about the small leak causing the pressure to drop.. Its only an ounce. I read that most older homes have leaky gas pipes. Our leaks, besides the main one, were all in the threaded joints, so the plumber took everything apart and put it back together with new sealant.

We own our home.
