Although a friend of mine in Houston says the only reason they are donating them is because their port was blown away in the hurricane. *shrug*

Given the circumstances, I'd say the actions are more important than the intent.

Hey, makes sense and does good. Without port facilities I imagine it might cost them a lot of money to find alternate berthing, fuel to get there, etc., and if New Orleans was the launch point for the cruises, probably very hard to get a new program started in a new city.
EDIT: After reading the article, only one of the ships was based in New Orleans. So this does seem like a sacrifice for Carnival (though admittedly an important and much-needed one)...it may actually be costing them money.
