I thought this was kind of cool (check out the part about photos taken on the 27th). Scientific substantiation for all those old maps.

Well, true enough.

Just kind of cool though. I mean, if a ship got blown seriously off course, people were starving and fearful of dying, with death all around them and it on their minds, a giant squid sighting would fulfill a lot of legends. Hell, in that day and age, a perfectly healthy and normal person sighting a giant squid would probably have thought the same thing.
