(BTW, there was a big fight between Scott and the studio on this, regarding old vs new cut due to him getting let go, which is why it's taken so long to get this DVD and, more importantly, the theatrical cut re-released on ANYTHING)

Man, you shoulda asked. I got a laserdisc rip redone for DVD of the Criterion version, which is the original (narrated) version. It's the same as the re-encoded laserdiscs of the Star Wars that have been around for a while.

In fact, it's still being seeded over at www.myspleen.com (requires signup). FYI, this site rules for odd and fan-made stuff. You won't find any new stuff on there.

I must have had a really bad cut. I have the Directors cut on DVD, I can't really complain, because it only cost me four dollars, and it was probably worth about that much. I just found the movie to be somehow very boring and uninteresting. It had some really good ideas though, but I felt it really blew its potential by just turning into one big special effects show (and from the 1980's too, the quality of which has long been far surpassed). I won't judge the other cuts until I see them.

In my opinion, the narration is what built the film in the theaters. You were told a little bit about what was going on like "Why Gaff talks funny" or "Why skin job is a racist term". Just little things that are worth knowing so you can understand the story. I'm sure if you watch it with the narration you won't be so bored.

I'll be sure to check it out just because I really did like the idea of the movie (reminded me a lot of Shadowrun). The movie seems to have a hardcore fan base and it gets a lot of really high praise. I often questioned why that was, but I suppose the Directors Cut has some very large issues with it.

Ridley Scott was left completly out of the "Director's Cut" which WB issued 10 years after the film had been released. The narration was cut and the ending changed slightly. Now there will be a third version that Zeus referred to above and we will all see now how it should have been told. So, Version one is the one with the narration, version two, no narration, version three, perhaps a monkey spanking it's ass.

Are you on crack, Barret? The director's cut was actually the director's cut. Scott didn't want the narration, and wasn't involved in its placement in the film. It was added after the fact because the studio didn't think the film made sense enough without it.

I don't understand how anybody could prefer the version of the film with narration. It was bolted on and it shows.

I'm curious to see Ridley's recut, as I wasn't aware that he felt rushed about the directors cut. I hope he doesn't fuck it up: the director's cut of Bladerunner is one of my favourite films ever, and I've found Ridley's more recent works heavy-handed.

You know whats sad.... I read the book this year, but have still not gotten around to watching the movie. I think its time to take care of that. I know its very much simplified when compared to the book (but of course)

As was said above, the Director's Cut was Ridley coming back and making the "movie he wanted to", which took out the narration and added in the orgami scene and some other little stuff. Ridley flat-out said he didn't like the narration. He was forced to add it after the fact as back then (1982) the execs felt things needed to be explained a bit 'cause it was "too confusing". Blade Runner is classic sci-fi (ie. stuff is very subtly set up and is the way it is, it's not breast-fed to you like it is now) so the thought was that people needed help to understand it.

Of course, the narration ended up providing excellent atmosphere and provide the film with a distinct film noir feel, which made it that much cooler. Hell, an entire game was made as a rip-off of the movie (Unde a Killing Moon) that was awesome because of the narration. Ridely should get over himself and realize that it simply made the movie better, even if he didn't want it initial or it wasn't a part of his initial vision for the film.

Just to clarify things, there is actually 4 editions of the film on this disc: original (with narration), director's cut, international extended cut (released only internationally, obviously), and new extended cut (being re-released in theatres just before the DVD comes out). Really, this is the disc to end all discs that everyone's been waiting for. NO ONE can complain, you get everything and much more. If they just add some good extras (including a documentary of Alien Quadrilogy quality) this could be one of the best DVD discs out there.

September before the DVD. Check out the link, it should give you a month. Like the Alien re-release, it'll likely only be for a week or two in limited release, so you'll have to look for it

So this new collection will have 4 cuts of the film, two that we've seen and two that we haven't? Wow. This sounds like it will be an investment of over $40.

So this new collection will have 4 cuts of the film, two that we've seen and two that we haven't? Wow. This sounds like it will be an investment of over $40.

I don't think so, it shouldn't be more than $30.
