I never really watched the Godfather. The idea of it doesn't sound interesting, just like watching through 10 hours of Rocky isn't interesting. Just don't care for it.

The Godfather movies, especially the first two, are excellent. They're just as much about the families and how everything affects them as they are about the mafia world. Goodfellas was basically a new-age version of Godfather with new issues for the people to deal with in the current world plus drug addiction and more of a focus on violence (in Godfather, drugs are a money-maker that aren't well liked by the Dons and not overly well tolerated; they're more of a necessarily evil to them). But the old ones protray the old-fashioned familial values seen in the mediterranian cultures and how the world of the mafia intertwines with it (they're set in the 40s). They're NOT action based flicks and do not have any "cool" storylines, but the first two are considered among the best movies made in the last 50 years for a reason. So, at least check out the first hour of the first one and give it an honest shot. If you don't like the first hour (of three), then stop right there and don't watch the rest of the series. But if you do, finish the series off. Even though the third one wasn't up to the quality of the first two, it's still worth the watch to follow what has happened with the family. After all, that's what the trilogy is about.

Oh yeah, I agree with Zeus (WHAT???).

I love The Godfather trilogy. Of course, my favorite is the first one. Watching the character transitions as all of the violence and mob wars erupt around the Corleone family is awesome.

Just note that Godfather is fiction, and Goodfellas, Casino, and Mean Streets are based on true stories.

That actually doesn't mean much in the movie world. "Based on actual events" might as well be a small step above fiction.

Goodfellas was rather close to the story of Henry Hill. If you see the A&E special on him, they didn't stray too much. Didn't need to, his life was a chaotic mess.

Godfather was much closer to the "based on true events" thing in some parts. They used a lot of actual "suspected" mafia things, such as Sinatra's ties with the mob and the entire church storyline in the third, in the movies. They just put a fictional story around it.
