I don't know enough of the comic (Iron Man, for those who don't know who Tony Stark is) to say whether or not this is a good choice, but Downey is a good enough actor to pull anything off. And he's MUCH better than Cruise would have been.

Could be worse...it could be like Fantastic Four or Eletra. I think Robert would add a darker, more complex side, and I seriously doubt he would jump into a plastic movie script. Especially after watching A Scanner Darkly, he just doesn't strike me as that kind of guy.
