Ok, just to make sure I am correct:

Borden (Bale) actually has a twin brother (like a twin brother in the womb, not a clone) the entire movie and they just live under the guise of one person. At the end, the brother is accused of murder and is hanged.

Jackman's character actually is cloning himself each time and then killing one of him so that only one exists.

A friend of mine was telling me that Borden cloned himself and that's who the other version of himself was, but I thought they were actually identical twin brothers.

You're right, your friend is wrong. Borden didn't know about the Tesla's replication machine and the movie explained that the twins had been living as one person the whole time.

Another clue is that Borden's wife said that sometimes when Borden said he loved her, he didn't mean it. The reason for this of course is that only one of the twins loved her.

Besides-- Tesla's cloning machine was an accident when trying to make something for Jackman. Bale knew nothing about it.
