Eyeshield 21 - for people who never watched football?

Okay here's the scenario outlined in Eyeshield 21: Your team just scored a touchdown. You're up by 1, with 1 minute left on the clock. Do you go for the 1 point or 2 point conversion? Well, if you're Hiruma, the super genius who knows everything there is to know about football, you go with the kick for a 2 point lead with 1 minute left on the clock... which means absolutely nothing.
The scarier thing is that on the Chinese forums there are people defending the kick. Is this just fanboy acting, or is it because we Chinese, as a whole, obviously don't watch a lot of American football? I really have a hard time imaginging any American fail to grasp that having 2 point lead with at most 1 possession left is meaningless so you might as well try to get it to 3.
