Scariest thing about Aliens was you never fucking saw the things in the first 2 movies. They would blend in their environments, strike from the shadows, cause confusion and hysteria, and when people finally settled down, there was an uneasy feeling that they were being stalked.

That was what made the original movies scary in the first place. You didn't see the first Alien in Aliens(2) until like 30-40 minutes into the movie, and there was tension built up to that point. It was a glorious thing to see these marines, with all their technology and training get ripped apart because they didn't know what they were getting themselves into.

Alien 3 really screwed the series up, because they went backwards instead of forward, with the 1 alien vs unarmed people, and after Aliens(2) people found that boring, so they went all action packed for 4, and eliminated all of the suspense, since then it's just been an action movie series.

So great, we have a Predalien, how much screen time is it gonna get that completely numbs me to the fact this is supposed to be a scary monster? The trailer had it all gory and shit, the most real gore in the original movies was the chest bursting scenes, it was hardly ever over the top. When will they get that gore/violence didn't make it great, but the suspense and unease the characters felt did.

Have you guys seen the re-cut of the third film that was included in The One Box Set (Alien Quadrilogy, greatest box set ever released)? It's a MUCH different film and very close to the first one both in terms of quality and atmosphere. Second is still the best IMO but I loved the first and third too.

The 4th one is the only real dog of the series now

I agree with one of the comments: Give me space marines, not present day Earth. Part of the appeal of Aliens was the sci-fi aspect. Then again, part of the appeal of Predator was that it was happening on Earth.

It's disappointing, but people want to go with "believability" and sci-fi and fantasy are losing ground to that.

Which sucks.

You can have believability in sci-fi. You just have to think the concepts through a little bit, which most junk sci-fi screenwriters don't do.

It's a comic book/fantasy movie, not sci-fi, but I actually realized why I liked Constantine so much: the presentation was surreal, but not ridiculous. They tweaked reality just enough so that while watching the movie, I think "I guess this could happen..."

(This only applies to the scenes that happen on Earth, and not in Hell, which obviously can not have any measure of realism.)

I don't agree with that, but Kupek's got it more right. Look at what LotR and Harry Potter did to the movie industry-- flooded with f'ing fantasy movies; any popular book a director can get his hands on is or has been made into a movie... Scifi's been pretty meek since because it lost the light to both fantasy and comic book movies. People don't know what they want but Hollywood's already decided that for them so don't worry!

Being a huge Lord of the Rings fan, Lord of the Rings was more than I could have ever asked for. Peter Jackson did a masterful job. I can't think of many movies so well done; and the reception shows, the three parts of the Lord of the Rings films are all counted among the best movies of all time.

The Predator? I think I have heard of that one before, released in the 70's or 80's sometime?

I wasn't knocking LotR-- I loved it too. But nobody is original with movies... since LotR and HP were successes now you have every known fantasy author getting a movie made. I love Xmen and Spiderman too, but they too launched a whole wave of bad comic book movies. I just wish Hollywood weren't such sheep and Scifi wasn't getting pushed out for the most part.

And I seriously hope your attack on Predator is a joke... :P

Dutch (Schwarzenegger) and a small group of commandos and sent by the CIA to a Central American Jungle, to rescue capture airmen from Guerillas. But it's not the armed terrorists which are the problem. Something hidden in the jungle, something invisible to the naked eye, something not of this earth is the problem. As Dutch and his men had back to transport, they are slowly targeted one by one. -IMDB

Seems fairly generic by this synopsis, but could be interesting.
